New song collaboration

Hi all,

Did not post much lately, too busy. But now I just want to present a new song (well, it was released already end of August), completely recorded and mixed/mastered on Linux. It's more of a slow pop song with orchestral stuff in german. Which is a big exception from my normally metal oriented productions.

The story behind is that a Facebook friend sent me a text, just in case I would be interested in writing a song for it. After about half a year I did exactly that and contacted Marius Stärk, whom I knew from Soundcloud and the Linux Audio group on Facebook, because I thought he would be perfect as a vocalist. He did record the vocals and also Trumpets and Horns as a big plus.

The songs mainline was basically created on a cheap MIDI piano (ESi KeyControl 49XT) with LinuxSampler with the grand maestro piano samples from the LinuxSampler homepage. ZynAddSubFX has its appearance as a bass enforcer in the choruses with a self-created bass patch, a string patch at the end of the second verse and also with some self-created bass drops. The orchestral stuff is done with an ancient gigasampler orchestral library with LinuxSampler. The bass used was a Peavey Millenium BXP 5-string through a Line6 Helix. There is also a guitar track in the second verse which is an Ibanez RGA-8 8-string also through the Helix on a clean Vox AC30 patch. The sea noises in the beginning are from a free Cymatics sound library.

All production was done inside Ardour 5.10 (recording, MIDI editing, mixing) with use of mainly the Calf plugins, EQ10Q, some OvertoneDSP plugins (Pultec EQ and Fairchild compressor simulation) and of course Carla. Mastering war also done inside Ardour with Tokyo Dawn Recordings' SlickEQ and Nova and Joey Sturgis Clipper. There was not much limiting applies, as it squashed the Mix too heavily, so the song is a bit quiet.

Hm, ok, I will try to translate to english (ahem, only direct translation, hope it will make sense ):

The gut (belly? stomach?) intervenes and it babbels so loud until the voice breaks.

And the words start loosing their power, until the feeling bows before it (the gut/belly/stomach)

Der Schmerz ist dabei
is maybe more like 'the pain is included/with it' , 'within' could re-translate as 'innen drin'

and although it's not literal, 'the full show' seems like a good approximation for 'das volle Programm'.


And of course, congrats, an immaculate, round production.

So far I've shared George Clooney's view on facebook , but if these are the things it makes possible, I might reconsider.
