(free) xfaded brass for Virtual Playing Orchestra

Post by Paul Battersby »

NOTE: unfortunately it has been determined that the dynamic cross faded patches (-DXF in standard library and -PERF in the performance library) will not work with LinuxSampler, UNLESS (according to khaines) you replace all "gain_cc1" instances with "volume_oncc1" in the .sfz files, but as far as I know, the rest of the sample library (non -DXF and non -PERF) is working properly.

Version 3.1.2 of Virtual Playing Orchestra is now available.

Virtual Playing Orchestra

The download page also has a link to a page that explains the cross fade patches and provides a comparison to patches without dynamic cross fade.

So it's just SFZ changes right? Somehow I thought about additional samples.

That's right. Everything in the latest version was possible with the existing samples. So if you have at least version 2.0, just an sfz upgrade is needed to have version 2.3

Btw why is it so quiet? I've loaded them in LinuxSampler and at 100% volume I get -21dB compared to -4db from Sonatina.

Still, great job, I'm looking to switch from Sonatina to your orchestra in the future.

The samples shouldn't be that quiet. Name an exact .sfz file and I'll take a look. So far, no one else has noticed the samples being too quiet. I'm wondering if it could be something specific to LinuxSampler?

Can you find a .sfz file that is not too quiet? I'd like to compare the two and look for differences.

Also, have you used a previous version of Virtual Playing Orchestra? If so, did it have the same volume issue?

I'm using Linux sampler, and haven't noticed volume issues with any versions of VPO. Admittedly I'm not mixing it with any other sample libraries except for the Maestro Grand Piano (which is actually a bit more quiet than VPO).

Very good work, as always, Paul! So bravo and thanks!

(And I think I'm qualified to say this - our daughter (12) plays the French Horn)

Cheers,
Wolfgang

I'm pretty sure it was Brass/french-horn-SEC-normal-DXF.sfz. I don't have my keyboard right now so i can't recheck.

Thanks Michael, I appreciate the confirmation that it's not a Linux sampler specific issue.

Thanks Wolfgang. I appreciate that.

p.s. Your daughter plays a fine instrument. You might be interested to know my dad played French Horn professionally.

Ah. So it's not all the samples that are too quiet. This makes sense now. For the -DXF patches, the Mod wheel adjusts the volume and cross fade. The default setting for -DXF files is about half volume. Those require the use of the Mod wheel.

This link from the download page on my web site:

http://virtualplaying.com/dynamic-cross-faded-brass/

... explains the -DXF patches.

I've tried a mod wheel but the effect is the same.

By default, I'd expect the mod wheel to send CC01 messages. If your mod wheel doesn't do that for some reason, then it won't work.

No, it did. I could hear that samples crossfaded, they just didn't become louder when I pushed mod wheel to the max.

My next guess is that linuxsampler doesn't permit the mod wheel to control more than one thing at a time. If these commands from the .sfz file don't work together:

xfin_locc1=64
xfin_hicc1=127
gain_cc1=24

... or simply this

gain_cc1=24

... doesn't work, then you'd get the result you're hearing.
