Sunday Morning Blues (of a bass player)

Post by wjl »

Just recorded a simple one man session in A minor. It's not on Soundcloud but on my homepage:

http://wolfgang.lonien.de/2017/07/sunda ... ss-player/

Or here (if that works from my page as well):

phpBB [audio]

The piano and drums are the Calf Fluidsynth, the effect on the bass solo is the Calf Vintage Delay. Recording was done in Ardour. No further mixing and mastering, just a simple and direct export to the .ogg file here.

The bass (2 tracks) is my Fender Squier Vintage Modified Precision Bass Fretless, directly into my Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 (2nd gen) USB audio interface (to which I also connected my MIDI keyboard to record piano & drums).

Enjoy. And thanks for listening.

Thanks!

Re mic recording: yes, I'll do that. I have a Røde NT-1a as well, but no bass amp yet. Thinking about something cheap like a Fender Rumble or a MarkBass JB Players' School combo, or something with even more of a vintage touch, like an Ampeg Portaflex PF-20T or so. And all of these (starting with the Rumble 40) also have Direct Outs which I could use to have both the bass and the miked signals, tho the Rumbles only have that post-everything I think.

But after my 35-year-hiatus, I have to start slowly, as you can hear in that short piece of mine... :-)

Hi wjl!

Very nice, that fretless sounds great! There are some really good free bass cabinet responses out there that can warm up and 'amp-up' a direct plugged in bass quite convincingly. The pack I use is seems to be no longer available but I'll try and upload it somewhere if you're interested.

An alternative to miking or buying a cab: Hermann made a great SVT sim a few months back, available as a Guitarix extra. I just finished up a project using it on both bass guitar and bass synth, and it has a great warm, fat sound. Blended with your DI into the Focusrite I think you would be very happy!

Thanks all - and yes, I've read about that Ampeg SVT emulation plugin for Guitarix. I'll try it, because I've had such an SVT stack (with two "fridges") when I was (much) younger.

Cheers,
Wolfgang

Sounds pretty good here, albeit a bit 'empty' - singer run away?
