Hi G,
I was about to ask what "budget" exactly means. You might also have to consider whether you need closed, isolating headphones (good to shield the monitoring from highly sensible condenser mikes from singers, for example), or headphones for mixing (here open ones are also very advisable).
You might want to have a look at this list for example:
https://ehomerecordingstudio.com/best-r ... eadphones/
(Edit: my own headphones, and I love them dearly, are the Sennheiser HD598SE which look very similar to the mentioned HD650, but which are also open, and as such, "bleed into" my Røde NT-1A during voice-overs, so don't get those close to any recording microphone. In fact my open Sennheisers are so realistic that when watching "Lost" for instance, you will look around yourself because of all those scary noises from the Hawaiian jungle )
Hope that helps,
and cheers,
Wolfgang

Re: Advice: best budget headphones
I use Sennheiser HD 595, I'm happy with them overall and have lasted many years. The only thing is that I find them difficult to judge bass/sub bass levels with them but a quick cross reference on my mp3 player with ear buds usually gives some perspective.

Second that, @sysrqer - mixing on headphones isn't really advisable. But I don't have space for nearfield monitors here, and as a bass player and former sound engineer I think I can still judge the bass even from headphones. Comparing it with other headphones and devices also helps as you wrote already.

Re: Advice: best budget headphones
I am not sure (also) about what do you mean by "budget", but I have these: http://www.krksys.com/krk-headphones/kns-6400.html
Although I did some research and read many reviews, I really cannot personally compare it to any other recommended pair of headphones, so take my "recommendation" with a huge grain of salt. That being said, I like them and more consistent mixes (or so I believe) after getting them.

Re: Advice: best budget headphones
Hi
I am in the £40 or less range (maybe $50?). It is encouraging to see that there are things in this price range that attempt to do the job. I have just used a good set of domestic headphones but am looking to do better.
I am not sure what I need but I (rightly) thought people on here would have some idea.
Thanks for all those helpful replies.

You could try the hd 681 Evo from Amazon and send it back if you don't like it. I think with headphones for mixing the main thing is not the price point, but the "realism" of the frequency response. Neutral is your friend;)
