Call it latin rock if you want a genre.
All types of feedback welcome
[jump to later posts to follow project development]
Actually this started out using Ardour (4.7 here) merely as a plugin host, to try and get guitar sounds that would give me a kick - mainly for practicing, but with sights to making a template for guitar recording eventually. One day, I wanted something to play to, so I programmed hydrogen and a MIDI bass using amsynth. As I happily played along, little motives emerged, and before I knew it, I was working on a project. It has still retained the practicing-the-guitar feel, I'm afraid

Re: Will my genius finally be recognized?
This sounds absolutely monstrous in a good way! For my tastes there would be some more dynamics or changes along the way--as it is, it sounds pretty much the same no matter where you drop the needle.
I think it's pretty great though. Solid groove, a nice arrangement, fat synth sounds.

Re: Will my genius finally be recognized?
Thanx a for the quick feedback, it's a compliment already that you take the time to listen&answer.
@42low: the annoying high pitched thingy probably is a synth with the VCF as a highpass with some resonance that is supposed to make a spheric swelling sound, it's not there always, but for most of the song. Doing the whole project on a stone age laptop (single core Celeron M 1.5GHz from ~2005), the number of tracks and the use of compressors/limiters already put ardour to the limit, so I've hardly used EQs and was happy to get the whole thing exported without glitches or crashes. That particular synth track would sure have benefitted from one, and a better reverb than amsynth's built-in would have helped, too, this is very audible right at the beginning.
@ufug The fat bass is half of an accident, although having been a bass player myself, I'm definitely fond such, but it was not intended to be such a typical fat synth - fat I wanted it alright, and that's where some of the scarce DSP resources got invested into a multi band compressor even, but I wanted it more like a natural electric bass, say, a velvet, singing Fender Jazz fretless. But then one thing I did try to figure out in this experiment, was how to make a song sound equally ok on HiFi and phone speakers, so I featured the frequency range where you can perceive the 'fat' sawtooth VCOs as such pretty well by their overtones, in order to hear what the bass is doing even if your speakers don't go below 250Hz at all really. Another thing I was trying to practice, was to master with a constant high output (and advice on how to get there, judge a mix etc. would be highly welcome, but I haven't checked the tutorials section yet, that would be the right place for a treatise on mastering), I wanted that if somebody would listen to this song in one playlist with commercial recordings, and maybe on a phone, it would stick out by some real decent noise coming out of the speakers at all times rather than having to turn up and down the volume because 'it's art, you know'. So if the result is getting approved as 'absolutely monstrous', that is music in my ears
The lack of dynamics is hence partly explained, but the main reason for that as well as for the duration of the recording, is sheer and plain narcissism. I can hardly get enough of an audiosphere full of guitars - all played by me
So if the groove turns out to be the saving grace of the piece and folks let it play for the full 8:41 without turning it off, I'm more than pleased, I'm aware that I cannot expect full & continuous attention the way the song is done, if it's good enough to run in the background, that's fine by me, it's certainly loud enough to still get noticed that way. Don't forget where the song is coming from, it can basically still be defined as "a loop that's good enough to practice soloing on for a prolonged time".
What I am really happy about, is that in such a full, tight and stuffed arrangement & mix, I am not getting any criticism for muddled frequency ranges, lack of definition, one instrument covering the other etc., more so since the priorities I had set for my scarce DSP resources didn't allow me to use EQs to thin out frequency ranges, the main tool I used were gain curves, and that's where half of the editing time went.
But if I should transfer the whole project to my 'better' laptop and invest more work, putting more dynamics into the song without loosing the general 'high energy' feel, is definitely a challenge worth taking up. I wonder how far I could get without recording/writing new lines, so far this is just 2 chords for 8 minutes over..
Big thanks for the input,
J.

Starts great. Really impressive.
Then it gets boring. Very.
A good embryo.

Re: Will my genius finally be recognized?
Nice! I'm really liking this, enough that I'm playing it over again right after it ended. Really loving the phat bass sound, although in my opinion it maybe takes a little too much of the stage. The guitars are doing some really interesting things, but I really have to pay attention in order to hear their parts since the bass spends the whole time right in my face.
I can agree with some of the other commenters that it would be nice to have some variation; my opinion is that you could break it up into a form like: intro, verse, chorus, verse, chorus, verse, conclusion. Add a sultry vocalist with some good lyrics and you would have a really solid, catchy piece of music.
Edit: Is the piano part live, or did you write a midi track for it? Either way, it's a nice touch, I'm just curious because a digital piano is my primary way making music.

Sort of liked it, but it goes nowhere.
The Yoshimi guy {apparently now an 'elderly'}
Re: Will my genius finally be recognized?
Groovy.
You could bring out the percussion a lot more (except hihat), lower the bass synth during guitar solos, do at least one rep without bass, add a piano solo/break. Maybe switch to a different riff / chord progression sometimes, or just do some variations on this one.

Re: Will my genius finally be recognized?
Thanks & hugs everybody,
I consider this a great harvest and feel highly motivated to continue this project. But it's possible that I'll be offline for a few days now, I've been attending this nearly on a 24h basis, that's an exception for my off grid lifestyle, or should I say on-and-off?
All the best,
j.

Re: Will my genius finally be recognized?
Good idea. It's a good jam, although the high end of the bass sound gets in the way IMHO in places where it shouldn't. Maybe this high end could be represented in those places by some kind of horns. The drum fills are buried. The drum sounds a bit like not related sonically. It's a good jam, but one must expect a jam. If one is expecing a piece, then past the 4 minute mark it gets boring. It could have gone past the 4 minute mark like that, but with some variations and a direction.

Re: Will my genius finally be recognized?
@Michael Willis: thanks, man. The Piano is a MIDI Track that was played in live with jack-keybord=the computer keyboard, then quantized. That's why I haven't attempted anything more complex. The instrument plugin is, IMO, excellent, though, it's the MDA Piano ported to lv2 (and with controls that make it very adaptable) , from this collection: http://drobilla.net/software/mda-lv2 , which is also on the kxstudio repos and maybe others, too.
@everybody: I think I will continue working on the project, apart from waiting to see where others take it. All flaws mentioned are there indeed, and all suggestions viable. I might try to improve the song by working with what is there and rather cutting away from it - I like the production ideal of The Art of Noise: Moments in Love, although I'm far from reaching it - a simple, 3 note idea made great by stacking, one after another, sound on sound. For some of the possibilities of changing the song, I could use help: vocals, y si acaso hay a quien canta en castellano, mejor, o brasileiro , would make it easy to develop it, though usually I do more instrumentals. And (@jonetsu) for horns, I haven't yet found any decent brass sounds in the three big studio distros, any clues on how to get the most brass with the least resources, very welcome. Thirdly, I have transferred the project from my 1.5GHz Celeron M Laptop to one with a dual core AMD at 2.5GHz and with 4GB RAM, and yet the project is maxing out the DSP in nearly the same degree. Ardour is configured to use both cores, I'm using 32 bit kxstudio , 3.13 rt kernel as on the old iso uploaded in 2015. According to the primers to AVLinux, there shouldn't be much of a difference between 32 and 64, is that different for AMDs ? Do they benefit from any (non-free) drivers ?
@the bass sound critics - see an earlier post of mine, and in the virtual collaboration section, I've linked to a project I had put on the ardour forums once: viewtopic.php?f=60&t=17220 , there you could hear the bass sound I once had and hopefully will find again, similar, amsynth-based, but more natural and not overpresent, yet present enough and even mighty on good speakers; unfortunately, all the laptops I was using then, got stolen, so originals and backups are gone. Various are the challenges to getting technologically creative if in many regards, you are living like a caveman .....

Re: Will my genius finally be recognized?
Updates, not yet an overhaul:
I discovered an alternative mix I still had, https://clyp.it/frpa1cwv , this will not change a lot for those who find the song too long, but the bass synth is not as present and maybe the guitars are slightly easier to differentiate.
Then I found a solution for the brass section, Robin Gareus' GMSynth lv2 plugin crashes for me in whatever host I try, but under /usr/lib/lv2/gmsynth.... somthing, there is a great big soundfont by Chris Collins? , now I've used polyphone to extract and edit my own brass section, overlapping keyranges giving you 2 instruments per key, trombone, sax or trumpet, not too sophisticated, but ready to use : https://www.dropbox.com/s/y1gj8f9safxhi ... n.sf2?dl=1
And here is a beginning of a re-work of the song, better drums&percussion, softer bass, horns, some details on eq.. a quick demo - errh, that's what I thought, but alas, too late I notice that ardour 4.7 exported crap. The midi&audio tracks don't sync. So be patient, once there is sunshine to fill my batteries..
So comment, please, lest I die of solitude....or wait a little, maybe I can post more.
BTW, I could not simply attach the soundfont : sf2 isn't accepted as extension.

So yes, this
https://clyp.it/kxhhsiwa
is how far I got substituting some drums for more latin percussion and trying out my new brass section.
Still not much.
Now I seriously need a bit of shoulderpatting
