HI from York, UK.

Post by GarryO »

Hi everybody! I guess I finally decided to stop lurking and join in. :)
I'm an amateur musician living in York in the UK.
I play guitar, bass and keyboards to varying levels of incompetence and, if you're really curious,
you can check out my efforts at http://www.garryo.org/music.html

Welcome to the forum. Don't feel bad, I lurked for a long time, joined last year and didn't even make my first post until this year. But then again, us musicians are all about being on time and always having money too lol...

I like your music :)

Do you want us to tell something or just fun music?

How did you get the guitar sound in this song? That wah wah... or is it a sample?

What do you use for bass? And how do you get your ´regular guitar solo' sound?

HI, studio32!
Do you want us to tell something or just fun music?
http://www.garryo.org/music/the-code-for-sanna.ogg

My original idea for "Code for Sanna" was to write a piece that conveyed hectic city life and the need to escape from that sometimes.
So the music would be intense at the beginning, but would end up being very relaxed: you have escaped.
I guess I needed a holiday at the time because I was thinking if only I could teleport ( like Star Trek ) to somewhere nice and quiet. Sanna Bay, in North West Scotland, where I'd camped the the year before, was the first place that came to mind.
The code for Sanna is the number you would dial into the teleport machine to go to that destination.
The original version didn't use Jools Slater's samples http://www.freesound.org/usersViewSingle.php?id=828209 but adding them complicated things and maybe distracted from the original idea. So what the preacher says now dominates the song and I tried to tailor that in. But those samples were recorded in York's outdoor market and that represents the general mayhem well, although I haven't seen any street preachers for a while.
I'm fairly happy with the result.
How did you get the guitar sound in this song? That wah wah... or is it a sample?
the rhythm guitar is me playing thru' a wah-wah. I went to the local guitar shop to get some strings and the guy had this new delivery of Behringer pedals. They were so cheap - 30 UKP - I had to have one. ( they are a bit noisy for recording though)
What do you use for bass?
The bass is my Squier P-bass special. On some of my earlier tunes I used samples with Soundtracker. The real thing is much better.
And how do you get your ´regular guitar solo' sound?
The lead guitar uses the wah too but mostly held in a fixed position to get a certain tone ( see Frank Zappa ). I think it was a 80's Marshall simulation on my Korg Fx box recorded direct to PC. The guitar is a Yamaha RGX-something ( sort of Ibanez clone).
I just got me an Epiphone Les Paul Custom :D - its beautiful in more ways than one - so you can expect some really juicy tones on forthcoming tunes.

I'm glad you enjoy my tunes and really appreciate your interest!

best wishes, Gaz.

Man you accomplished your goal, that hectic city was what I thought of! :)
The preacher make it a bit (too (?)) heavy though...

I need to buy a Wah wah!

I love your bass playing!

Your avatar has a left handed bass on it if I'm not mistaken, I assume that you play it?
