Rosegarden's source of sequencer timing

Post by MarPar »

Hello!
I,m frustrated with Rosegarden.
In fact in the MIDI section of Preferences, at the voice (Source of sequencer's timing) I can choice the followings items:
(auto)
system timer
HR timer
PCM playback 0-0-0
PCM capture 0-0-1
PCM playback 0-1-0
PCM capture 0-2-1
PCM capture 1-0-1
PCM playback 2-3-0
PCM playback 2-7-0
PCM playback 2-8-0

but none of these plays well, for instance, an imported MIDI files.

My audio system:

Code: Select all

marco@PC:~$ cat /proc/asound/cards
 0 [PCH ]: HDA-Intel - HDA Intel PCH
HDA Intel PCH at 0xf7220000 irq 125
 1 [C170 ]: USB-Audio - Webcam C170
Webcam C170 at usb-0000:00:14.0-7.2, high speed
 2 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xf7080000 irq 17
 3 [K49 ]: USB-Audio - KeyRig 49
                      M-Audio KeyRig 49 at usb-0000:00:14.0-7.3.3, full speed
My kernel:

Code: Select all

marco@PC:~$ uname -r
4.8.0-040800-lowlatency
In which way can I configure Rosegarden to playing decently?

Code: Select all

marco@PC:~$ rosegarden

(auto) always worked fine for me. What do you mean with "none of thes plays well"? Tempo changes? Lost notes?

While Van Basco plays good the midi files, Rosegarden doesn't play midi files. And the time cursor (when I click "Play") or is blocked or run well but I don't hear any sound (neither the loaded midi file or the sound of the midi keyboard).
I've tried all the options but none of the options is good for Rosegarden.
I can post any information about my system if anybody needs them for a solution. Thank you.

There was a problem with 4.8 kernels which were fixed somewhere near 4.8.7.

So, do I must install a newest kernel?
In this case, could someone suggest to me which kernel is the candidate to install?

I think this is (or could lead to) an "XY problem" (http://xyproblem.info/).

You should note that Rosegarden is not a midi player per se, but a midi (and audio) sequencer.
The above means that it doesn't make sounds by itself, in other words, it needs a synth to make sounds.

That can be a hardware synth, an external software synth, or a plugin synth. I will explain, without detail, how to setup the latter.

You need a so-called dssi plugin. This can be, for example, a soundfont player in which you have to load a general midi soudfont file (for example, fluidsynth-dssi with fluidsoundfont-gm). In debian/ubuntu-like systems that is a:

sudo apt-get install fluidsynth-dssi fluid-soundfont-gm

Note that the soundfont (.sf2 file) will be installed to /usr/share/sounds/sf2/ . You can always copy/move it to your home directory.

Back to rosegarden, select "synth plugin" for the track with the midi file and push the button "No synth" at the left bottom panel "intrument parameters". A dialog will appear in which you will select "fluidsynth-dssi" and then you have to load the gm soundfont in it.

The above is an example, there are other synth plugins which don't need a soundfont, like hexter (also in the repos).

I've triend to compile the last version of ROsegarden:
I've downloaded the file then extract to a folder.
In this folder I've created the folder "build" and i went in.
Then I has given the command "cmake .." and everything goes well.

If the playhead doesn't move when you hit play then you have a faulty 4.8 kernel, you will need to find a newer kernel or wait for it to be packaged.

Solved!
I've installed kernel 4.8.16 and everything goes well!
The source of sequencer timing is now set to (auto) and works good!
Thanks to everybody! :D
