Re: Speek VST for Linux
Maybe because of that :
VST Speek text to speech is 100% freeware, the plugin is based on the Software Automatic Mouth (SAM) vocal synthesis software created by Softvoice Inc for the Commodore 64. The original C64 software has been reverse engineered and ported to C by Sebastian Macke : http://simulationcorner.net/index.php?page=sam

Re: Speek VST for Linux
The trend I see is more developers coding for linux systems period, regardless of code license.falkTX wrote:I'm really not liking this trend of freeware but not opensource plugins lately.
if the plugin is free, why not make it opensource?
(please, someone tell me. for small projects like this I just can't understand...)
A good thing. If someone is building their coding resume' in hopes of establishing/strengthening
a coding carreer, the more fans on the internet, the better, and freeware is good advertising.
I have a friend who manages a restaurant, with very unique seasonings and sauce on the bird wings.
She absolutely refuses to divulge the contents, let alone the recipe. It's far too wonderfully complex
for me to identify the individual parts. So I pay gladly for the excellence.
The wings are just a very small part of the menu. So why the secrecy?
There are twenty other restaurants (or coders) nearby, competition is fierce, margins are small,
failures are frequent, and every 'little' advantage adds up to keeping the place open,
and paying the mortgage for yet another month.
To some extent, coding, is like home cooking. It can be great, and the results can be shared,
but it's the cook's choice to share recipe, and sometimes a little secrecy is more fun.
Cheers

Re: Speek VST for Linux
Well, Linux is made on the base of open source. There is a world wide community working together to get the best out and for it.glowrak guy wrote:The trend I see is more developers coding for linux systems period, regardless of code license.
A good thing.
As more close source enter the linux world, as less bugs could be fixed by the community, and as more unknown factors coming into account. That will lead at least to the same situation we've on other OS's like windows or OSX which most people here have leave, because it become um-maintable. I'm not sure if that is really a good thing.
In the short term view, you are right, more (professional) Linux Audio application may lead to a higher acceptance from hardware vendors and therewith to more users. That isn't bad at all.
But the hole thing has a downside, as I pointed out, we will loose the control over our OS. We will loose what brings us here, loose the ability to fix things quickly.
On the other side, we've the possibility to develop our own hardware, as it currently happen with the MOD. There working the best skills open source developers and engineers together to get the best out of and for open source. I'm much more excited about this, then a few close source applications, even more, when they are based on open source, but decide to be close source itself.
Nothing bad, this is just my 2cent.
On the road again.

The MOD project is indeed exciting, been saving up for it.
I haven't bought a pizza since it was announced!
I don't see a few dozen plugins, games, and commercial apps jeopardizing the license
of the kernel. But politicians in bed with Intel, Msoft and others, are not
to be trusted. Look at how they badger Apple to break their product privacy encryption,
using the pretext of terrorist prevention as leverage, when the terrorists in question
are dead, and any co-conspirators, if they existed, have long since moved on
to the next phony visa's in their stack.
Cheers

That's not what I talk about.glowrak guy wrote:I don't see a few dozen plugins, games, and commercial apps jeopardizing the license

But, if you prefer a abstract comparison, let's take a car. As soon your car wont drive, you've to find out why.
In old car's, that is no problem, you know what every little piece in the car do, could analyse it and repair/change the expected part.
Newer car's been full with Black Boxes, expensive little Black Boxes, you didn't know what they do and how they do it. Finding the culprit could become a hard and expensive ride, and mostly you have to bring your car into a garage at least.
On the road again.

There are (lots of) people all over the world who are really attracted by this kind of rat race called capitalism and who would defend it with their lives - even if they suffer from it, instead of thinking about and trying out other ways and ideas of social coexistence. But to me it seems we just have to sit back and wait for this system to clash against the wall. I don't give a dime if anyone else uses software written by me. Even if i would be the only one using it i also would go on developing and releasing it as open source. So no need for any kind of crusade from my pov since every human is the architect of his own fortune.

opinions regarding closed source plugins, was Re: Speek VST for Linux
Greets,
Since the topic discussed in thread clearly indicates the need for a changed subject line.
Hey, I'm not mad or sad either, I just like to see things kept on point. The OP was about the Speek plugin, the current discussion is about open vs closed source, ergo the subject change.
Best,

This is a holy war, there are pros and cons to both sides of open vs closed. People are just familiar with zero-sum economics so even with freeware there's a natural desire to protect intellectual property. Doesn't make it right, but I think its completely understandable. Luckily we are free to install and use what we want and as long as there are enough active purists like Stallman there will still be a constant pull towards freedom of computing, just like commercial enterprises often pull towards closed, proprietary monopolies. For those of us somewhere in the middle I think we're fine. If free-licensing is really better (I think it is) then as long as its advocated sufficiently I think more and more things will become open.
I was appalled to see the comment on wavosaur's blog being so rude to the developer FOR MAKING THE EFFORT TO SUPPORT LINUX. C'mon folks. A little civility never hurt.

I think a linux users loss of control is desired by chip and motherboard designers partnering withtramp wrote: ...we will loose the control over our OS. We will loose what brings us here, loose the ability to fix things quickly.

I just have had a look over there.ssj71 wrote:I was appalled to see the comment on wavosaur's blog being so rude to the developer
To let you know, I ain't commented on wavosaur's block, that wasn't me, even if the guy there talk about black-boxes.
The talk there have nothing to do with the discussion here.
I didn't see a war here, just a discussion were people give there opinions. So, please stop to try to make it a war, it isn't, at least here.ssj71 wrote:This is a holy war,

Sitting back and waiting for the system to crash will lead to exactly the opposite outcome.Markus wrote:There are (lots of) people all over the world who are really attracted by this kind of rat race called capitalism and who would defend it with their lives - even if they suffer from it, instead of thinking about and trying out other ways and ideas of social coexistence. That system which throttles and chains them will only become more pervasive and powerful, because people sat back, accepted it and allowed it to happen.
Life is a struggle. Once people stop struggling, profess their love for everybody and learn to love Big Brother they may as well roll over and expire.
It's no different with Open Source software and hardware. It's an endless struggle and fight to obtain and retain choice and to not be subjected to corporate and government controls. Obviously it's not always possible to eliminate and avoid all proprietary and closed tech but this should remain the ultimate goal.

To me it seems you got my "sit back" quite wrong in terms of meaning, I didn't mean "sit back and enjoy your iPhone" at all.Sitting back and waiting for the system to crash will lead to exactly the opposite outcome.
