Nearly 2016 but still no chiptune plugin for Linux!?
Is this some kind of conspiracy? How can we nearly be in 2016 and still not have a single chiptune plugin for Linux?
No, I don't want to use LMMS, a tracker or wine. I just want a decent, native LV2 or VST emulation of something like a C64, NES or GameBoy sound chip.
I'm sure some universal hacker law is being massively violated here!
I'll just leave these here shall I?

Re: Nearly 2016 but still no chiptune plugin for Linux!?
Isn't it possible to make those kind of sounds with regular synths? I know most people who make chiptune in trackers either use single cycle waveforms to build their own synth, or draw their own waveform (renoise) or use the other capabilities of the tracker (sunvox's simple synths).
What's wrong with using a tracker anyway?

Ease of use basically. I find a piano roll interface much more intuitive than a tracker interface and if I wanted synthesise an SID or whatever in another synth I'd have to do quite a lot of work to match up parameters and avoid certain features that the synth may have that might make it sound better than it should.

I don't think it's going to be much longer before someone decides to create a chiptune-specific, Linux-native plugin but for the moment it looks like my best option is to use deflemask, create the sounds I want then import them as samples into a DAW I feel comfortable using.

I doubt anyone will ever make a better chiptune synth for linux, danboid wrote:Is this some kind of conspiracy? How can we nearly be in 2016 and still not have a single chiptune plugin for Linux?
than TAL Noisemaker. Beyond that, you can always sample and edit a few of your favorite game sounds,
and make a hydrogen kit or three from them.
Calf monosynth can be put to good use, and probably Zebralette.
Cheers

Re: Nearly 2016 but still no chiptune plugin for Linux!?
deflemask is the best chiptune synth / tracker for Linux - it emulates 8 different retro console/computer sound chips very well. Shame it's not FOSS and doesnt support JACK!
deflemask's sound chip synths in VST/LV2 plugin form would be totally perfect for my usage but until Linux chiptune plugins arrive - I'm sure at least one will soon enough - I'm pretty happy with using Audacity to record the output of deflemask and using that with samplers like MusE's SimpleDrums or samplv1.
I wish mhwaveedit could record Pulseaudio's output, then I'd never have to use Audacity when wanting to record ALSA/PA whilst not using an ALSA/JACK bridge.

Buzzmachines - there's a possibly a chiptune generator buried out here:

Ok, found it: No luck with the open sourced Buzz Machines, that SID generator was actually built in Neil Sequencer (as a "Lunar" module).
I don't remember how good/bad it was, but there you go:

Thanks gimmeapill!
I never gave Neil / Buzz a proper chance as I was put off by its tracker interface but maybe F can comment on the usefulness of that code?
I don't think that code is VST or LV2 ready so its not going to be that easy to do, maybe no easier than converting the LMMS plugins?

Not a plugin so you'll have to wire it up the old fashioned way.

Hi Baggypants!
Thanks for your suggestion. I know about Bristol but I am such a devout anti-JACK/non session kinda guy I prefer sampling DM over using Bristol via JACK. SID geeks seem to rate DM much more highly than Bristol. DM emulates two versions of the SID.
DM's author hasn't replyed to my request for DM plugins yet but at least one other person has also expressed their interest in DM in plugin form.
The DM author has stated he will open source it if he can no longer maintain it as donationware.
