Some questions about MIDI DAW

Post by composer »

Hello all.

I would like to run a MIDI DAW with the following parameters:
1. record from a MIDI keyboard
2. Apply built-in MIDI effects, or available plug-ins:
· Arpeggiator
· Scale
· Chord
· Random
3. Piano sound.

Any decent DAW that will fit my needs?

Nearly any will do.

Since the Linux audio and midi world can be set up in a modular way there is no need that a DAW can do everything you need because you can start an external plugin host like jalv or Carla and connect everything as appropriate.

Most convenient for you will be some all-in-one solutions like Qtractor or Ardour.

- Record and edit your MIDI-tracks/clips
- Process MIDI-data in realtime with the midifilter-plugins
- Create the piano sound with plugins like Linuxsampler (sfz- and sf2-soundfonts), Carla (used as sf2- and sfz-player), Fluidsynth (sf2) or other synths like Hexter (DX7 clone with nice Rhodes-like sounds)

I started with Rosegarden which features a score editor as well but can't load lv2-plugins, so I switched to Qtractor because I wanted an all-in-one solution.

That sounds good!

What MIDI plug-ins are available on Linux? I have in mind only free software.

I am interested mostly in
arpeggiator
scale
chord (chordator)
and to combine these.

Thank you!
