Ardour, How to normalize a stereo track separately?

I wonder if it is possible to normalize the two channels of a stereo track separately in Ardour. In Audacity is very easy to do this, but in Ardour I must convert tracks to mono, normalize and then join them to a stereo track again... There most be another way to do it properly.

Why would you need to join them to stereo again? Just work the mix with the two channels as mono track, or make a bus.
(Also, why would you need to normalize them?)
