Ardour Crashes!

Post by MattKingUSA »

Ardour crashes when I try to apply compression to a track. Not a recorded track but an existing track that I am working with. Any suggestions? :D

I am using Ladspa plugins but the rest I will post tonight. I'll try and run it in a terminal and get some kind of out put as well. I'm also having issues on my main recording laptop that isn't allowing me to record at all right now. New version of Mandriva has givin me nothing but headaches.

Ok, here is for my Acer Aspire 1800 laptop with a broken qjackctl. I tried to uninstall and reinstall but it didn't change the settings back. Now everytime that I start it it freezes. So I took a screen capture. I will post the info for my other computer in a minute.

This is not the only problem, It won't connect to hw:0 in the first place which is the default sound device. So I tried to change the driver over to oss and changed my system settings to use the oss driver. But nada.

you've got a problem with your jack setup. If you upgraded something (kernel ? system settings ? hardware ?), it ended up screwing up jack.

you'll have to be more detailed about your environment (h/w, kernel, jack version, etc)

Maybe you should dive in our WIKI? http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com/doku.php ... 23a135a829

Or install an multimedia distro like 64studio or Jacklab? (not strictly necessary of course, but could make things easier..)

I tried Ubuntu studio but had issues with sound in Flash videos and media players and also could not get my wireless card to connect. If there were a distrobution that was media based that did not restrict the use any I would consider it. But also, I would like to stay with Mandriva I have used this distro since Mandrake 7.2 and I really like the way they do things. Unfortunately KDE4.2 is really giving me headaches, this isn't the only issue I have had, I have another thread about my desktop system problems going on the mandriva board as well. But I will get it working I hope, with help of course. :D

EDIT: Here are some examples of the issues I have been having in Mandriva 2009.1 First, I tried to resume my saved WinXP machine in Virtualbox last night to watch some Netflix movies and my computer rebooted..it rebooted! And then I openned Ardour that had closed with and error previously and guess what..it rebooted! I've never had problems like this on any Linux distrobution. It's making me want to switch back to 2009. But I do like the Kwin effects they replaced Compiz-Fusion very well.

Maybe the Mandriva forum can help you with Mandrive problemo's... BTW I don't use kwin or compiz when working on audio

I agree with studio32 that eye-candy and heavy works (be it audio, video, or hardcore CAD) don't really mix...

That aside, you can try updating to Ardour 2.8. I've been using it since a couple days, and it fixed one of the most annoying problems: All the plug-ins appeared twice in the list, and there was a huge delay when adding a plug-in

KDE4 effects are enabled on my Acer Aspire 1800 still and Jack is now working!

I killed pulseaudio and kmix to allow jack to run. So, not sure why one of those two were the issue. But I don't really care now because it's working. I guess I will figure it out later.

On my HP TC4400 I turned off the Real Time option in qjackctl and made sure that I used and it seems to have stopped the problem of Ardour closing when I apply effects. :)

Make sure you have specified the correct output device in jack. I had a similar problem (lots of xruns when started jack) and it seemed to stop when I disabled RT option. It was because jack was trying to output on the onboard card instead of the USB one, and the irq associated to the former was running at an ultra low priority.
Check also that the irq associated to your card has a high rt-prio.

Cheers,

Gerard.

I am having issues with this problem now. I don't know how to make the audio in jack record and play back through my pcmcia sound blaster audigy 2 zs card. But the rest of the comptuer uses the device, though I've not been able to record using it. Also, where in Jack do I specify bit rate for my recordings? I woud preffer to use 24 bit instead of 16 bit but I notice that in the Jack Messages it says that it is running at 16 bit.
