Simple audio player that works with JACK

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Simple audio player that works with JACK

Post by lykwydchykyn »

Hi everyone; was wondering if you all could help me patch a pothole in my workflow.

I'm looking for a simple, lightweight audio player that works with Jack. Reason being, I'll be working on a piece and want to hunt for a sample or track to drop in, and whatever program I'm in (e.g. qtractor) doesn't have a file browser with audio previews. So I need some way to demo my samples from a file manager quickly, and most of the audio programs I know are either too cumbersome or don't work with Jack.

On a normal desktop system (without Jack) I'd just use paplay, aplay, or mplayer for this purpose.
Advice?

You can use VLC and connect it to JACK. Here's some info about the package: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1948086

It's a long time ago since I've tried it though.

I use Audacious myself but I believe AlsaPlayer supports JACK as well.

Thanks guys. I didn't realize mplayer worked with jack, but I found some instructions on the Arch wiki to make it use Jack. I added it as a custom command in pcmanfm, and this seems to do what I need.

Aqualung works with JACK. Deadbeef works with JACK with the JACK plugin loaded.

Once upon a time, just to play music through JACK, with gapless support, seemed to be a huge deal. Now it doesn't seem to be a big problem at all.

VLC, when I last looked (a while back) is not good, because it drops the connection whenever you stop play. Maddening. Hey, Audacity does that too: I don't know what some people think "JACK friendly" actually means!
