Re: The Friday Interview
Thank you all very much for your positive comments! This is a really fun project for me as well, and I'm determined to keep this up for long (or til we run out of people anyway, which doesn't look to be anytime soon ).
artek: It's fixed now at least, was a misbehaving cache plugin that did it. And, how rude!
Cheers!

Why not contribute to qtractor? If Rui disagrees with your changes - fork it!
Creating something to rival qtr that'd be worth using is no mean task!

Re: The Friday Interview
I realise qtractor lacks JACK-MIDI so maybe I should've said have you not looked into how hard it would be to wrangle JACK MIDI into qtractor?
I know it won't be easy but it'd be easier than starting over!

Re: The Friday Interview
Just read the interview - good stuff zth/F!
F:
I wouldn't be ashamed of recommending any FLOSS app because its too 'mainstream'. If its good its good, no matter how old or well-known it may be. The other stand-out FLOSS instruments for me are linuxsampler (and by extension qsampler, although its not a plugin), samplv1, setbfree, whysynth and hexter.
If you were to update classical (which by that I presume you mean Euro/Western arts music and not another type of old music) I believe it would more likely be classified as neo-classical / neo-western arts music or maybe techno-classical. There'd likely be too much going on for it to be considered new-age, which is usually trance-like with not much if any trace of melody or beat.
EDIT
Oh yeah, and the rogue synth looks promising - it could be the most powerful FLOSS LV2 synth yet but I've yet to have much of a play with it.

Heh. If you believe that Haiku is going to be a viable production platform, then I have a bridge you might be interested in buying.danboid wrote:JACK MIDI in qtr would make it easier to port to Haiku, once Haiku gets a full JACK port, that is!

Re: The Friday Interview
I like alternatives and Haiku is the only non-Linux OS that interests me.
I'm not pretending it will be competing even with Linux anytime soon.
Please show some some respect for alternate, fledgling platforms and ideas.

@danboid,
Modding qtractor would be nice, but I'm talking about drastic changes to the GUI and data structures. Best to start from a clean slate. I'm looking at qtractor's code for examples of Qt/JACK/plugin usage... might be able to borrow some code, maybe even add JACK MIDI to qtractor. If I'm successful - BIG IF - then we can see about incorporating my work into a future version of qtractor. But let's not get ahead of ourselves.
Haiku - with all due respect - has all of Unix's limitations and none of Linux's popularity. Waaayyy too much baggage. Unix embodies some great ideas, but..... If we want a realtime, user- and developer-friendly OS, I think we need to ditch Unix's model of files, processes, users, security, text-based configuration/communication.... and *good luck* getting OS designers to agree on alternatives! I'm afraid we're gonna be in this rut for a long time. My best hope for escape in the near future is a bare-bones OS (or OS-less apps) on small special-purpose hobbyist computers... no internet etc, just audio apps.

Re: The Friday Interview
I would if that 'jack2 port' wasn't such a laugh. I'm sorry, but people wildly overstate the mutlimedia capabilities of BeOS/Haiku. It's not because of my derision that it will never go anywhere--the technology and skill just isn't there.danboid wrote:I like alternatives and Haiku is the only non-Linux OS that interests me.
