Retro Banana presents >Pixels at an Exhibition<

Post by Retro Banana »

A WIP album based on Mussorgsky's Pictures at an Exhibition suite. This album is to be made entirely with my two favorite applications: Qtractor (on my Acer Apire 5735 w/Ubuntu 12.10 64-bit) and Caustic 2 (on my 32GB Nexus 7 w/Android Jellybean). Until I complete the entire album, though, I will release each song as a single as they are made.

Finished Tracks:
"The Hut of Baba Yaga"
https://soundcloud.com/retro-banana/the ... -baba-yaga
The original painting used in Mussorgsky's suite was of a cuckoo clock, portraying the bird-legged house of Baba Yaga. Baba Yaga is a witch who flies in a mortar carrying a pestle. I captured the havoc of being chased by such a house with a quick tempo of 175 BPM. This track was made my exporting on Caustic 2, putting the audio as a track in Qtractor, and adding the piano (Qsampler), synthesizer (amSynth), and clock chimes, which I got from Freesound. Originally, the song segued into The Great Gate at Kiev, which is why the ending sounds incomplete.

Works in Progress:

"The Gnome"
Though the original painting was lost, it was believed to be of a nutcracker. The song sounds like the gnome is running very crookedly with short, stumpy legs, stopping and starting often. Some parts of this song were in 3/4, others were in 4/4, but because Caustic 2 cannot do anything else but 4/4, 2/4, etc., the 3/4 section is in quarter note triplets. The 3/4 sections will be heavily-drummed synth solos, and the 4/4 sections will be pulsating dubstep. This song will take TWO Caustic files, one for the main song, and the other for wobble bass. I will maximize the volume, then run the wobble bass track through a Korg Monotron to get a more organic, analog sound.

Wonderful rendition! Somewhere between Mussorsgys original piano piece, ELP and Nintendo.

I was heavily inspired by ELP. That's highest praise to be thought of as sounding like that.

That's cool. I hadn't realised that Android music was that advanced

It's not just Android. It's also Ubuntu. But yes, Caustic 2 is very advanced.
