How can I control zynaddsubfx or other plugs?

Post by Tim »

Regarding my question in the howto:

http://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php?t=104

Can somebody help me out? I know Rosegarden has the possibility for basic control using my midi controller (eg, volume, balance) but what I want to do is control al knobs of the synthesizers provided on Linux using my UC-33e midi controller. So far I could get sounds out of the plugs using my midi keyboard, but I can't control the knobs using my uc-33e. I linked several thins in patchage and jack but so far no good results.

The controller is recognized by the way so that can't be the problem.

Many thanks if somebody knows a tutorial or something that explains the situation..

I nobody knows the answer here, you can try IRC #lad @ freenode or the linux audio user mailinglist, see signature.

Midi-controll of Zynaddsubfx is unfortunately restricted to twelve parameters with fixed controller-numbers.
http://zynaddsubfx.sourceforge.net/doc_3.html
To lift restrictions of fixed controller-numbers, qmidiroute can be used to change them.
Find qmidiroute here:
http://alsamodular.sourceforge.net/
btw. alsamodularsynth (ams) is fully midi-controllable, the same with phasex, nekobee, (whysynth,) amsynth, puredata and probably others.

Regarding rosegarden, i never used it and don't know how it handles midi-controller-messages.
Just guessing it might be possible to record or play-through controller-messages from the UC-33e to a track in rosegarden to get nice time-varying sounds out of your synths connected.

hope this helps.

Many thanks both of you! I'll dive into the other synths.

I already saw the document regarding Zynaddsubfx, the only thing is that I don't know how to control the given parameters. With VST plugins in combination with Live I just clicked midi, click a knob that I want to control and turn a knob/fader/button on my UC-33e. Than it stores that I want to control the midi from that parameter.

Very intuitive, handy and not a lot of work. So far I haven't seen that with the programs/synths under Linux that I've tried. But I think I just don't know well enough yet where to look/ how to treat the software.

It must be possible indeed to control the knobs with Rosegarden, I just know for sure that it doesn't store the automation. So I have to bounce the midi recordings directly to Ardour.
