video cards

Post by gingerling »

Just wondering about getting a video card. Would really like two monitors but need a new card for another plug. sounds like a good idea anyway. I have a pci slot thing, local shop, who are not free software/linux people, tried to sell me an ATi card, but my clever friend said now, Nvidia is better supported by a long way. anyone know what to expect with kxstudio and this? crunchbang looks like hell tbh. Am considering my options carefully this time as dont want tooo many problems :S

I can't speak for ATi, but if you are planning on running an RT kernel you can forget about official support from Nvidia. The proprietary driver won't compile without a patch and after that it only loads on certain cards. That being said, the Nouveau driver has come a long way and I've been happily using it with 2 monitors on a 3.2-rt kernel.

This is true for some cards. Some cards are still problematic. Most cards should work fine with accelleration disabled.
