Future of LinuxMusicians?
As nathan suggested (http://linuxmusicians.com/viewtopic.php ... f6d#p22825), I created a thread here to discuss what to do with the forum.
I've setup three different bulletin boards (the ones with autoinstaller at my hosting provider) you can evaluate. They're available at:
http://mybb.excds.se
http://punbb.excds.se
http://smf.excds.se
Send me an email at excds@kth.se and I'll provide admin login (wouldn't want to give that to the whole of Internet would we?).
Also, I can provide hosting for free since I've got plenty of space left where I'm hosting my private stuff.
Cheers!
/Daniel

Hmm, maybe it's better if you post a message to me here and I'll send the details. Otherwise I have to backtrack to see that it's actually an e-mail address belonging to someone here...

Re: Future of LinuxMusicians?
we should include some extensions that allow users to participate more in oreder to let less work for admins/mods.
I could think of a button "mark as spam" available for users with over 100 messages or so. If 5 of that users mark a message as spam, the message and user get deleted without action of mods. something like that.
Also a simple extension that allows new users to post links only afer x messages posted will help a lot.

That's what I've been thinking. Give some users some extra rights and restrict new users. I suspect the spammers will only visit once to drop off a load of spam.Capoeira wrote:we should include some extensions that allow users to participate more in oreder to let less work for admins/mods.

I know Linux Outlaws now require you to register on their forums by sending an email to the guys and they create your account. You have to listen to the show to know what email address to use. The problem with that is that some people may not get around to registering at all. We want to make it as easy as possible to get on the forum.

Re: Future of LinuxMusicians?
Well, I've followed the links at the beginning of the thread, and they're all clogged with spam. I'm assuming they never got past the idea stage. How old is this site? I've noticed lots of really old threads (and I foolishly posted in one). Maybe the forum needs to be (for lack of a better word) pruned. Some unactive boards can be merged or removed. Also, maybe we can try to offer a product here to attract new members such as tutorials and guides.

That's ironic, as the reason for evaluating other forum software packages is the perceived amount of spam on this one.lintlicker wrote:Well, I've followed the links at the beginning of the thread, and they're all clogged with spam. I'm assuming they never got past the idea stage.
We've been here since about 2008 I thinkHow old is this site?
Personally I don't mind old threads hanging around - I'm not against reviving an old thread even, as long as it's on-topic.I've noticed lots of really old threads (and I foolishly posted in one). Maybe the forum needs to be (for lack of a better word) pruned.
That might be a good idea. Some inactive boards can be merged or removed.
Sure! The wiki would be the obvious place for those. Also, maybe we can try to offer a product here to attract new members such as tutorials and guides

Not aimed specifically towards Windows users, http://wiki.linuxmusicians.com/doku.php?id=newbies might still be a reasonable start. It has a section and some links to more information on JACKlintlicker wrote:Windows to linux - most important differences/ things you MUST understand

Re: Future of LinuxMusicians?
Great ideas, guys, let's keep up the brainstorming. I really want to make sure this board keeps on going for those that are interested in it, even though I can't be as active as I once was. I've already had one person volunteer to upgrade the forum software to latest phpBB, so that might be a good first step.
Re: Future of LinuxMusicians?
Oh, wow, that's, eh, so much spam. And no, I haven't done anything else than just put those up. Maybe I'll just delete them...lintlicker wrote:Well, I've followed the links at the beginning of the thread, and they're all clogged with spam. I'm assuming they never got past the idea stage.
And yes, it seems that this discussion died a bit. :-/

Ok, for example, if you follow that link, there's a page about configuring your system. I think that page is the perfect example of a page that needs linux newbie friendly help. Here's a specific example: "Disabling resource-intensive daemons, services and processes". I would love to do something to optimize this on my system, but I have no idea how to go about it. I would love a link to a page like "For n00bs, here's how to do this" that outlines the specific steps.raboof wrote:

I would volunteer to do it myself if I knew the answers to my questions.

use a systemmonitor like htop, for example. see if any processes use CPU, than find out what processes those are and if you need them.lintlicker wrote:Ok, for example, if you follow that link, there's a page about configuring your system.
