New planet software

Post by raboof »

Hi,

The 'planet' software running http://planet.linuxmusicians.com has some quirks and hasn't been updated since 2007.

I thought it'd be a good idea to start looking into alternatives. One promising option I installed at http://planet.linuxmusicians.com/moonmoon . It seems to look (needs some branding yet) and function (esp. the syndicated atom feed) better. Unfortunately it also seems slower (it does more work in 'real time', planetplanet basically just periodically generates the site (which is a great option for these kind of sites imho btw).

What do you think?

Hello raboof,

Unfortunately the new planet page doesn't load here.

Best,

Bah, looks like a slow/broken feed can really slow the whole thing down. Before we could use this that should be fixed.

For now i added a timeout which sort of patches things up. Anyone aware of other planet tools?

Looks good! And I'm not familiar with planet software so can't think of any other alternatives.

Best,

I like the test install you have there. Very simple. The main issue is that it is currently slow-loading...

Given the terrible performance of MoonMoon, I came across 'rawdog'.

Seems to work nicely ( http://planet.linuxmusicians.com/rawdog/rawdog.html ), the HTML/CSS could use some more love though.

And I've found no way of customizing the 'feed list' yet, it would be nice if we could drop the dates and just show the list at the right-hand side.

Tweaked it some more, seems to work quite nicely.

NilsGey mentioned the RSS feeds didn't work well - turns out the URL's weren't updated properly yet.

ATOM and RSS1.0 support has been dropped, FOAF, RSS2.0 and OPML should be uptodate from now on.
