Veteran musician, Linux newbie

Post by Paul Joosten »

Hi all,

Having played from paper for well over 60 years I'm now looking for other ways to manage my score library. Perhaps an old laptop running Linux Mint can do what I want but I need some help to get started.

Since 1963 I play the recorder. When I retired form the navy I joined an recorder group called Rosa Nova in Winschoten, The Netherlands. We play mainly classical music and sometimes more popular music arranged for recorder ensemble. I play almost all sizes, from sopranino to subcontrabass, at an advanced level. Only the smallest (Garklein Flötelein) is impossible to use as my hands are too big. I love going to large recorder festivals in The Netherlands and abroad.

Some years ago I stumbled upon trad Irish music and now I'm a regular at the Open Irish Sessions in O'Malley's pub in Groningen. I'd like to believe my recorders are some hybrid between tin whistles and trad Irish flutes. Even real Irish musicians told me I fit in quite well :D When travelling I usually try to find local sessions on thesession.org and I always have a set of recorders with me even on scout jamborees.

These days I get a lot of scores by email as PDF and printing them all is not only time consuming but also brings the challenge of keeping them organised. An electronic device can do that much more efficiently and as I have several old laptops unfit for modern windows versions lying around I hope to solve all my requirements with them. Unfortunately I have absolutely no experience with Linux so far and have yet to find out how to use that. What software is available that can do what I want?

Any pointers, best practices, tutorials etc are most welcome!

Every linux distribution have access to packages with PDF readers, and it might even come with one installed. Okular is pretty easy to use so I can vouch for it. If you want to look into alternatives: https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/PDF,_P ... Comparison

Best regards and if you have any questions I would be happy to help!

Thanks @CabalCrow a whole new world is opening up. I noticed Okular is cross-platform and even works on Windows, I'll check it out.
