Drumgizmo against the rest

Post by crustypants »

Hi,

I used to use Hydrogen for my drums, but stepped up to Drumgizmo a year or two back, and its been great.

However, its not had a release in a year, and I keep seeing posts about Drumlabooh, sfizz kits, AVLDrumkits and who knows what else.

Is the main difference with Drumgizmo still the bleed simulation? Should I be looking at any of these others, or anything else?

This is for recording rock/metal drums I should add.

Drumgizmo is my favorite out of them all including commercial plugins. It's because of the bleeding and because of the raw drum kits. I get to mold it the way I need it to sound. In fact when I get a recording from my band when I'm doing the band stuff and not my personal stuff, DG sounds exactly like the raw material that my drummer would send me. Because of DG, I know how to handle bleeding and how to clean it up plus the room mics. For me I do metal and heavy hard rock so I need to have that big room because say if I was doing a song that needed a led Zeppelin feel to it I have the room to do that and yes some people can say you can use reverb but if by now people can't hear reverb and the artificial sound I don't know what to say but I always hear when that artificial room is created.

DG may be raw and yes the boys due to covid slowed them down but I don't think the project is dead but it sounds the most natural out of everything that's available to Linux. At least to me it could be different for others but I'm just giving it from my perspective. I've done the same drum patterns with a few of the kits available and then sent it to people that just like music and the DG people always ask if that's my drummer and the other ones they just say hey that's a nice beat so if at least to me if they are asking if that's my drummer it means that DG sounds more natural like if a human is actually playing it.

DG aka drumgizmo is my favorite by far. I just wish they kind of made it a little bit more attractive like the AVL kits which are awesome by the way but Glen was explaining something about why there's no room and I couldn't understand. I'm simple when it comes to this I just need to have either a mono or stereo room track.

And I've used it on metal and people love DG in some of the metal songs. That is the songs that I've used it on. Also DG has the ability to play loose to give actual more of a human feel I guess that's there to take care of that round robin wish to this day I don't have a clue on how it works because I've used it and I've never heard the difference on what it says it's supposed to do but I can tell right away when I start messing with some of the knobs in DG to adjust the human feel. And here's another bonus on DG, I will put full bleed of course on the room and the overheads and then I till all of the bleed for the high hats the ride and all of the skins on the kit and then I blend all that bleed back in from the overheads and the room so then I can really focus in on the skins because no bleed.

Again that's my take so remember contact the guys from DG to see where things are because I'm pretty sure the project is still alive in fact I'm praying that it is. All day things set above it's all my opinion and others are entitled to their own but that's just my take on it.

The bleed doesn't have anything to do with the sampler itself, it only depends on the drumkit. If it has separate room/overhead/etc tracks - you can mix it to your taste.

So what I use these days is sfizz. Simple, actively developing, the project has a nice wiki with lots of sample libraries. Try Wilkinson Naked Drums for example.

I've been trying to get my head around sampled drums recently. While DrumGizmo works well and has some nice unique features, I'm not really a big fan of the included kits. Spent several hours trying to create a DG kit from Michael Willis Tchimera kit but failed miserably. I like the sound of that one, thanks @Michael Willis ! For now I'll be using either sfizz or Drumlabooh, both of which handle sfz kits fine.

Here's a link for the sfz intruments GitHub for anyone wishing to explore - https://github.com/orgs/sfzinstruments/ ... s?type=all .
I just fetched Wilkinson Naked Drums but haven't tried it yet. A quick listen can be had at their site - https://wilkinsonaudio.com/collections/ ... aked-drums . Thanks for the suggestion! @lazyklimm

I've never used sfz drums. Can they handle hihat chokes and different playing velocities? I'm a huge fan of the Tchackpoum kit but Drumgizmo is too much for me (no offense at all to the geniuses who make it), so if it does what I need I'd give Drumlabooh a try. I would be using it for edrums (as opposed to programming drum parts).

I'm currently using GMRockKit in Hydrogen and surprisingly happy with it, but the kick and toms aren't quite crisp enough for me... otherwise I wouldn't bother looking elsewhere. I can't seem to find other Hydrogen kits that sound good, have multiple layers, and allow hihat chokes.

The SFZ format supports choke groups, yeah.

No love for the AVL Hydrogen kits?

I made a kit using samples from Tchackpoum: https://github.com/michaelwillis/tchimera-drum-kit

It is SFZ and tested with Ardour+Sfizz. It supports chokes. I picked my favorite pieces from all of Tchackpoum's samples, so it doesn't have all of the same sounds as the DrumGizmo Tchackpoum kit. It is rather a mash-up of multiple kits, hence the name Tchimera.

Chokes, different velocities, weighted round robins, CC-routed samples (for example, select closed hihat sound by CC4 - Foot Pedal - value) etc. Sfz is really big.

No love for the AVL Hydrogen kits?

Actually, I wasn't aware of them!

I do have a version of the Black Pearl here, which would have been from before this list https://www.bandshed.net/sounds/AVLDrumkits_H2/ came out (my install is from 2022). There must be some reason I'm not using that one. I can see that one of the drums is "Sabian hat choke," so maybe I'm not using it because I couldn't get my edrums hihat pedal to kill the hihat? I'll have to try again.

I'll definitely have to try the other kits. Previously, I didn't use AVL kits in general because the ones I was aware of only included one rack tom and a floor tom, and I'm a three-tom player.

Thanks for pointing this out!

That's actually the main reason for my curiosity about SFZ drums, was because I was interested in trying out your kit!

Sounds interesting. I'll most likely try it at some point. Gonna try those other Hydrogen kits that @Impostor mentioned first, before I take on another experimentation with my setup.

THere are a few diffferent versions of the AVL kits. Black Pearl 5-1-0 and Red Zep 5-1-0 contain 3 toms each, contrary to the 2023 versions, which contain 2. @GMaq: maybe these are "unofficial" versions?

Virtuosity Drums is also a cool kit.

Edit: and if you happen to use MusE, there are ready-to-use idf's available for Virtuosity Drums and also for Michael Willis' Tchimera kit.
