Ghost/Background notes

Post by d.healey »

Does MusE have a ghost notes feature so I can see the notes from one MIDI track or item in the piano roll of another?

Yes, in a way.
The piano roll and drum editor and wave editor can show multiple parts at once,
even from different tracks.

Select two or more parts on different tracks (or the same track),
then open the piano roll or drum or wave editor on them, by right-clicking
on one of them or by using the hot-key to open the editor
(sorry I forget the hot-keys at the moment), or by using the main menu.

The editor will show all the notes from the selected parts at once.
However, you can only edit the notes of one part at a time.
Choose the 'current' editable part by cycling through the parts with the Alt+Left/Right keys.
The editor will show the notes from the 'current' editable part in normal note colours,
while the notes from all the other parts will be shown in grey.
Hit the Alt+Left/Right keys to cycle among the parts to get to the desired editable part.
Watch the editor's title bar to see the name of the 'current' editable part.

That's one of the main reasons why I chose MusE.
As the instruments gradually accumulate, it is necessary to check and modify the harmony for each part.
Among FOSS DAWs, only MusE, Rosegarden, and Qtracktor seem to be able to do this (Qtracktor only supports viewing as ghost notes).

In MusE, you can select multiple MIDI tracks you want and press Ctrl + E.

That's perfect, thank you!

Follow up question: Is there a way to move CC data along with the selected notes?

Hm. Either I didn't add that ability or it's broken.
I can't seem to visually drag-move CC data and notes at the same time.
I will keep an eye on that.

However, a workaround is to select the desired notes and CC graph points
(hold Ctrl while selecting), and then use 'Cut' and 'Paste' shortcuts or main menu entries.
Our Copy-Cut-Paste-Erase system will operate on everything that was selected.

For better control over how existing notes and CC data are erased underneath the drop point,
choose 'Paste With Dialog' (see the 'Paste Midi Controller Options' a.k.a. the 'Merge Options').
Using 'Paste' just uses a default erase policy. (Hm, I thought that I put a place where the defaults
can be changed, possibly from inside the 'Paste With Dialog' or 'Merge Options' dialogs,
but it doesn't seem to work. I'll keep an eye on that.)

Years after adding Cut-Copy-Paste to the midi CC graphs, I added the same ability to the audio controller graphs.
There it is possible to drag graph points and parts at the same time.

I can select, and edit, notes from different parts simultaneously (moving, lengthening, deleting, copying/pasting). But not cc data.

Or is that a bug, not a feature :)

It works here. I can only edit one part at a time, including CC data.

Huh. Watch me editing three parts simultaneously:
