Hi fellow fossicians!

Here is my entry for this round. I was inspired by the fantastic project "The Album Leaf", hence the name ;)
Some pianos are hidden behind a thick wall of processing and might not sound like a piano anymore. To support the sound I added some guitars and a bass guitar.

Alright, here goes my second submission ever...
Rushed, lots of issues and far from done, but submitting anyway :)

https://soundcloud.com/amberdrake-38439 ... ning-skies

Tried to create a doom metal/drone metal track.

The song is based around an instance of MDA Piano in a very low register with Bb note droning throughout the whole song. Or rather it lays chords that all have Bb in them.

Played the drums, bass, guitar and did some vocals. All the rest is MIDI.

Made in Ardour 8.
Aside from MDA Piano, I also used Surge, this Rickenbacker bass soundfont from sfzinstruments, Virtuosity Drums from Versilian Studios, and my own recordings of my Yamaha electric cello.

Will upload project later.

My submission : "Diz Algo (Say Something)

https://archive.org/details/avelho-diz-algo

The theme was composed some time ago and I believe it is good for this month's proposal.

and a melody I composed for a poem written by a friend, which ended up not being used.

Ardor 8.6, Piano and MDA Piano were used, bass and guitars were recorded by instruments, the drums are several layers of more than one type of .sf2 and the strings too with CarlaRack.

Please find my feedback below.

  • Amberdrake - Burning Skies: Solid production. Would suit well a Quake mod soundtrack.
  • Avelho - DizAlgo: That is not quantized, maybe a bit too messy at times but that's part of the charm I suppose. Very lively.
  • Min Jun Gi - My Diary Is Like An Old Piano: Ah, finally some music. Good and moving composition, variety of chord progressions, plenty of resolutions.
  • MyLoFy - Schallplattenblatt: Excellent sound and composition. I like how you set the delay of the main melody introduced at 00:27, it is seriously off-beat and yet it feels right. Nice build-up. Nice little plucks introduced at 3:01.
  • Peace From The Ruins - Heavy City Light: The piano is a little bit too raw, maybe some more reverb of other effects would alleviate that. Nice heavy bass introduced at 00:48. The transition at 01:12 is a bit out of place. But it is rectified at 01:16 with the nice bending synth. I think there is too much interference with bass lines at 01:38. Nice ending with the guitar arpeggio, but the staccato bass ruins it a little bit when reintroduced at 02:06, too much dissonances. Somehow though it does create an interesting effect between 02:12 and 02:25 where it is very tense and dissonant and yet feels like a resolution and a relief.
  • Spotlight Kyd - Spring Break: The very first appearance of the sax sounds a bit too unnatural, then it is OK, either because I got used to it, or because it got better. Maybe the brass instrument introduced at 00:56 is a bit too loud. The epiano lead introduced at 01:33 is nice but consists a little bit too much in a series of ascending and descending arpeggiating motions, with pockets of nice phrases here and there, I like the dissonance at 02:01 for instance. Overall the composition is rich and pleasant, as usual. I enjoy hearing this wind controller.
  • Trumpetrespas - PianoMania: The piano is too forte and robotic. The melody isn't bad but lacks cohesion.
  • nyx eles - At End, At Last: Beautiful muffled piano intro. Very nice bending strings. That is such a delicate composition, sonically and melodically. Well done!
  • sg75 - Vaulting Velocities: Interesting experimental effects. Nice build-up. Would suit well a Quake mod soundtrack too.
  • squiqKid-deluce - Arpeggio Echoes: Harmonic Reflections: A bit too dissonant, the bass doesn't particularly fit the epiano. A bit out of tempo too. Not that I mind much. The volume is lower than the other entries, you should probably use a limiter like https://x42-plugins.com/x42/x42-limiter, with just enough input gain to trigger the limiter once in a while.

I have written my reviews. (phew, that's 1500 words  )

I did not mean for it to be so big, but since it is, rather than cluttering up this forum, I put it on github.

asublin wrote: Sat May 11, 2024 8:53 am

A bit out of tempo too.

What do you mean by out of tempo? You mean the bass is not aligned with the rest? That is entirely possible, as the bass is a hardware machine with less lag than the plugins. Other than that, I'm not sure what you mean.

Thank you all for your submissions! I enjoyed the music and learned something new from your projects. I decided to score compositions based on these three criteria:

  1. Plugin: how skilfully plugin is used, importance in the composition. (0 - plugin doesn't fit, 1 - standard, 2 - creative)
  2. Emotion/atmosphere/vibe: how strong the feeling (0 - no emotion, 1 - there is an emotion, 2 - compelling)
  3. Originality: is there something catchy, outstanding in the composition (0 - plagiarism, 1 - original, 2 - memorable)

They are still pretty subjective, so, please, don't take it personally, it's just my opinion based on my horrible taste.
Maximum score is 5 according to the voting site, so even if it scores 6 it clips to 5.

Reviews:
A-Lin - Dai Mi Kunefe
Plugin: 2 - Different instruments are believably imitated by the plugin, that was quite unexpected.
Emotion: 2 - Swell of hope.
Originality: 2 - Stuck in my head for a day.
Total: 6/5 (5)

Amberdrake - Burinin Skies
Plugin: 1 - Fits the track.
Emotion: 2 - Music from Hell.

Total: 4/5 (4)

Hey hey, time for my last minute review. This was an excellent round, really good submissions. Well done everyone!

A-Lin - Dai Mi Kunefe

Very minimalistic instrumentation, which serves the beautiful composition. The reverb is just right. I wouldn't change a thing.

Amberdrake - Burning Skies
Unexpected growls, awesome. I like the mix, instrumentation and the composition in general.

Avelho - DizAlgo
Nice tempo changes and other surprises

Min Jun Gi - My Diary is like An old Piano
Hey, MusE, cool! Very solid entry, good mix and composition. The VSCO instruments fit the song very well.

Peace From The Ruins - Heavy City Light
The dramatic start is very soundtracky. Cool noisy instruments in the middle section, which is a great break. The end is very abrupt!

Spotlight Kyd - Spring Break
Another Demo-Button track! Quite fun and well made, not a fan of the genre though

Trumpetrespas - PianoMania
Your melodies and harmonies are not very predictable, which I like. Could use some dynamics like eg the use of velocity

nyx eles - At End, At Last
3/4 time signature, great! Good use of reverb makes the strings come alive. Perc is decent enough; all in all excellent track!

sg75 - Vaulting Velocities
Very cool sound effects and use of the stereo stage. Lots of detail. Could be a soundtrack also. Nice ending.

squidKid-deluxe - Arpeggio Echoes Harmonic Reflections
Very sparse and short, I guess the idea could be expanded a bit with a richer instrumentation

I agree with @MyLoFy. Excellent submissions. I upvoted quite a few songs after listening again and again ...

A-Lin - Dai Mi Kunefe
This is beautifulness (emotionally, awesome at 0:43)!
Great choice to come up with the bass late. Only critique: the mix sound a bit harsh at times.

Amberdrake - Burning Skies
Dark :) I go with the vibes. Vocals seems a bite too quite.

Avelho - DizAlgo
The middle section, predominately the switch-up made me smile :) Nice stereo image.
I missing a bit coherence. There is almost too much going on that I have a hard time to lock onto it.

Min Jun Gi - My Diary is like An old Piano
Somewhere between peaceful and melancholie. Mids are too loud for my taste. I wonder how a quite a bread/middle section would have suited the song.

MyLoFy - Schallplattenblatt
I love the rythmical gimicks. The organ is super sweet. Tension building is superb.
The snare in the quieter is at times a bit too much in terms of loudness and snappyness.
There is a slightly modulate sine wave >1kHz in the end. Intentionally?

Peace From The Ruins - Heavy City Light
Great atmosphere. The industrial parts are so strong. But also "classical" suits the song well.
The piano is almost too prominent in the industrial part. The song is a little bit short.

Spotlight Kyd - Spring Break
Cheesiness 5/5 Great interplay between the brass instrument and mda epiano :)
Also drums sound authentic to that style.

Trumpetrespas - PianoMania
Feels more a little bit sketchy rather than a fully developed song.
I like the last 1/3. The ending is good but I feel that one or two notes are missing.

nyx eles - At End, At Last
The cello is just awesome! The slide at 1:15!!
Sweet, sweet crackles. SurgeXT? I dig the mood.
The dissonances is first section are a bit too prominent in my taste.

squidKid-deluxe - Arpeggio Echoes Harmonic Reflections
Good mood. The bass is a bit unusally, but adding to the feel.
The B section does not connect that well. The production could use a bit more polish.
