TuxGuitar, no sound

Post by D-Tuned »

I'm trying to use tuxguitar to edit tabs into midi files exported by rosegarden.
Hearing is not a must but as it often does with music it would be helpful :-)

Right now I'm in Suse Tumbleweed, with or withoput qjackctl started
(all other sound software sounds good).

"Settings>Sound>Midi-Sequencer" has only one option: TuxGuitar-Sequencer and

"Settings>Sound>Midi-Port" is empty with nothing selectable.

Does TuxGuitar need jack at all?

TIA

jack is not needed.
Try playing with enabling various audio plugins and sequencers in Tuxguitar: Tools->Plugins. Perhaps relevant one is not enabled for you.
TuxGuitar, Java application, uses Java sound support.
By default (well, depending on your distro, on Gentoo you might compile openjdk without any sound support) it will use alsa, but if you install icedtea-sound, it will use pulseaudio.

I recommend experimenting with the audio plugins and sequencers available in the Tools menu of Tuxguitar. Maybe you don't have access to the appropriate one.

The ALSA output plug-in was NOT checked, defaultys I thinks, don't remember mucking with it. So in Tumbleweed it now does produce sound, in Leap-15.4 it segfaults, haven't checked my other 5 distros yet.

Try installing tuxguitar-jsa

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install tuxguitar-jsa

I had the same problem and this solved it.

If that's the Java-Sound-Api plugin it's already installed, checking IT didn't make sound but changed the sound if sound was already otherwise available. I found that checking the Alsa and the Fluidsynth plugins (if unchecked) tend to work but the whole setup is a bity inconsistent. Just checking/unchecking one of them doesn't give imediate results. I got it working on the two Suse distros I use, haven't looked elsewhere yet (seldom need tuxguitar normally).
