I'm trying to make a handheld DAW out of my Raspberry Pi 4B with stock 7" touchscreen. I tried Ardour which runs but seems to have preset non-adjustable minimum window sizes which aren't very compatible with this small screen.
Can anyone recommend alternative software that might be a little more amenable to running on such a setup?
Those are synthesizers. A minimal DAW may be NON or its fork NSM. I had a look on https://libreav.org/gallery and it's a treasure trove of software. Depending on the resolution of your Pi screen QTractor might be an option too. QTractor is a really, really nice full blown DAW (even though its developer calls it a Midi sequencer). You can detach the mixer, messages etc. windows from the main window and place them on other desktops. A minimal startup window of Qtractor may like this:
Tell us what you ended up using, I like my Pi with its little screen too!

Do you need full DAW with vst, automation, sequencer, audio clips and so on? Hard to imagine all this working on 7" screen, I couldn't even do it on 12" laptop.
For just sketching maybe https://helio.fm/ or some modern tracker
Bitwig / Surge XT / Linux Studio Plugins / u-he stuff / TAL stuff

Caustic 3 has nearly all of that, and is usable on phone screen. Only thing missing is VST (are there any android vst plugins available?), and audio recording & editing is limited to drum machine, pcm synth and vocoder, but I suppose you could use those to play for example vocals.

I have tried Caustic, G-Stomper and other android apps - really powerful things, but in the end decided to go with more simple https://casualcomputing.info/sputter/ more like a sequencer but with synth, sampler, filters, LFOs, etc. I'm not ready to spend hours with phone trying to create something complicated with touch interface
