('Twas a) Ghast Christmas

Post by Rainmak3r »

I know I literally just shared All I want for Christmas is Odin, my viking metal version of Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas is you", but then @Impostor had to write this in the comments:

Good song! I'd love to hear your interpretation of "Last Christmas" next year :)

and got my head spinning  The moment I read that, I imagined "Last Christmas" as a funeral doom song, and I couldn't get it out of my head. I tried holding back, and saving it for next year, but eventually I just couldn't, so I gave up and in a couple of evenings I did everything:

https://soundcloud.com/lminiero/ghast-christmas

Much slower than the original (30bpm), and obviously as much as possible in a minor key, as a good funeral doom song should be
And if you're one of the contendants for Whamageddon, no worries, this song is 100% safe!
It's quite short (I did everything quickly), but I still like how it came out, including the atmospheric intro and outro, plus the very quiet middle part.

Happy holidays to you all!

Sounds very good; well done! This is an instantaneous Christmas favorite of mine!

A bit late to the party. Love the harmonics, makes my think about Paradise Lost or that group with the swan on the cover...what was their name...slow heavy stuff.

I would have loved to sing to this track! :D

That is the one! :D Thanks a lot @Impostor . My Dying Bride! A great band! Fitted my mood perfectly when it was released, and would probably do it today too...

It's still their best album in my opinion. Gorgeous melodies in every single track.

I love both Paradise Lost and My Dying Bride, who were good representatives of early gothic/doom metal  My Dying Bride in particular always have massive guitars, which I guess were partly an inspiration since I love them, even though in this case the main "muse" were funeral doom bands, a genre where the metronome goes even slower and heavier! Mostly Colosseum and Esoteric, in this instance.

@oscillator you're welcome to add a vocal track to that, if you want  Funeral doom bands always have very deep growl vocals to match (here's a good example from Colosseum), which for some reason go very well with the long, slow and orchestrated songs.

Oh, I will take that as a challange :)!

Excellent mood in this track. But I've you hadn't written it, I would never have guessed that it is a cover of Last Christmas. Not much left of the original song.

That's the whole point  It's the same notes, but played MUCH slower, instead of a major chord, you have a minor chord, and different modes. But I agree there's enough layers of transformation that it's probably hard to recognize sometimes
