Best sound card to buy?

I want to buy a sound card with multiple inputs and outputs, what should I get?

Whatever card you choose, you'll want to make sure it is supported under ALSA (the Advanced Linux Sound Architecture). If you have the money, the RME cards are professional grade. The M-audio Delta series cards are above consumer grade), and much more affordable. I have a Delta 66 with the Omni Studio breakout box (4 analogue inputs with 2 built in pre's and 2 digital in's) that I picked up on ebay for seventy bucks. It works like a champ.

I have an Alesis Multimix 4 USB that works well under linux. It was the only thing I could afford. Don't buy it, my experience has not been good with it. It works great under linux but it's not a good interface.

If you have a PCI-Slot, I would also suggest the M-audio Delta series. Never heard of much trouble with them when you work with jack. On Ubuntu/Pulse there might be a small bug, but nothing serious.
But does anyone know a similar card for PCIe?

I own an M-audio too (the fastrack series), and works perfectly..never looked for a PCI-e card, i prefer external ones so i can connect it to more computers.

I am using the smaller version: Mobile Pre USB (1st Generation).
It was quite convenient and offers enough for homerecording.
