Short funk rock intro

Post by modusjonens »

Started work on a funk rock track.

https://soundcloud.com/modusjonens/mess ... -the-horns

I used an 8 string guitar (Ibanez RG-8) for the “bass” parts. 8)
I chose to double the bass part as well.
Hydrogen for drums.
LMMS for organ sounds.

Questions:

Are these drums too busy? :?:
What do you think of this “bass” tone?

Thanks for listening! :D

Drums: Not necessarily too busy. But then, I enjoy a Squarepusher album now and then, so I'm kinda used to manic drumbeats.
Bassline: fits perfectly with the drums.

Funk Rock you say? You can just as well do a breakbeat/jungle version! I'll be interested where you end up with this track. Be sure to post it here.

Nicely done. I don't think the drums were too busy. Except maybe in the outro where everything fades out, the drums could slow down instead of getting more active.

I was interested in the Ibanez RG8 as well. Though I'm pretty sure I would do nothing but chug the bottom two strings :)

I like it, for that "busy" feeling! Very clear mix, althoug I wouldn't mind hearing more of the drums.

Hi @modusjonens, thanks for sharing this intro. I would like to know what comes next.
Your bass tone and the riff is ace!
The drums sit less well with me. They aren't necessarily to busy, but somehow it sounds too mechanical and not like a drummer. It's perhaps the exact way you play it or it might help if there was a little more consistent variation in the drums, perhaps a touch of humanising (lead/lag). Or perhaps a mix of a groove interupted by fills like what you have.
I really am looking forward to the finished song!

Dope track!

My 2 cents:

Drums sound great. As you describe the tune as an intro, I picture this as a very busy intro, followed by a less busy verse segment, with this busy segment maybe brought back in later as the chorus.

Bass also great. The tone reminds me quite a bit of Goblin's Roller album (one of my all-time favourite albums), except a bit weaker in the low end. Could use a tad more beef, IMHO, but nonetheless excellent.

Very nice! Bonus points for the logic pun for a handle.

Sounds more like jazz fusion or (like someone said) acid jazz. I think the bass tone is a bit thin but I think can work in some contexts.

Yep, I also think it's more fusion-y than funk, but then I'm not an expert on funk rock
I do like the track and the overall vibe, but I have to agree that drums could be improved: not sure if it's because of the drumkit you chose to use in Hydrogen (there's many available there, which one did you go with?), that may not have many different samples for different velocities. In general, Hydrogen has a randomizer for velocities that can help make patterns more dynamic, but again those only help if the drumkit can use that randomization, and if patterns themselves are not repeated too often in a row.
