Soda P - Icon of Your Time (demo, unmastered)
Dear all,
Despite all the instruments being played sloppily, the timing issues and my unstable vocals I had a great time mixing this song with the Furious Desertrix (Qtractor 0.4.7). With the new MIDI learn stuff it is now possible to do automation with the help of an extra 'automation' MIDI track. By using such a track I could automate the Degrade ladspa plugin (thanks Leigh Dyer for the pointer!) in the beginning of the song and the Calf Vintage Delay and Calf Phaser lv2 plugins I used for the vocals and the FluidSynth-DSSI strings.
The song itself was recorded in our rehearsal room with Qtractor 0.4.7 too. We did use a click track for this song which allowed me to use effects like the Calf delay. I didn't get to mastering it, I'm thinking about setting up a mastering chain myself instead of using Jamin. Not because I don't like Jamin but I still don't completely fathom this tool and it does not really fit in my (real-time) workflow as it drains quite
some resources.
In the process of recording and mixing this track I came to realise how much I like Qtractor, it really is such a powerful piece of software. And props to the dev(s) of the Calf plugins, not only are the plugins
very usable and do they sound good, they also look stunning. I've used the upcoming 0.0.19 version from git and was blown away by the looks, these are by far the slickest native plugins I've seen.

Unfortunately I had to mix on my headphones again mostly, I have to do mixing after work when our little baby boy is asleep.
Best,
Jeremy

Thanks Capoeira, which mic are you referring too? We used about 4 or 5 different mics.

Ah, thought so already. I doubt that it's the microphone (a Studio Projects B1 condensor), I think I should use a different compressor plugin or tweak the EQ a bit more. But I do agree, the vocals sound really flat. Maybe a different reverb/convolver could work too.

I like it.
The rhythm section is very cool. Thumb up!
Do you play this song with your band? On stage, I mean.

personly I think you could give the vocals more presence, it isn't realy in the mix making it sound like a liverecording (but yea, there is nothing wrong with it if one likes it to sound like that)

Thanks! With Soda P we don't do live shows currently. But we played this song a couple of times live on stage yes.Scary Hallo wrote:I like it.

Cool
It actually is our interpretation of a blues in E. We wanted to stick a B in somewhere but abandoned that idea.

I like the song, very punky. I don't think you should polish the mix too much, this song needs this raw feeling. BTW: Very good guitar sound!
The more it stays the same, the less it changes

Thanks Jan, and no, we won't polish it any further. Just some minor adjustments regarding timing issues and I do have to redo the vocals because I fear I did something wrong while recording them. Capoeira already pointed that out.Jan wrote:I like the song, very punky. I don't think you should polish the mix too much, this song needs this raw feeling.
That's really good to hear. I still have my doubts about my sound sometimes (don't the majority of guitarists have that?) especially with this particular guitar, a Fender Telecaster from 1977. That batch is renowned for its feedback because of the bridge construction and also I think my bridge pick-up needs wax potting. And on the recordings I didn't use it with my favorite amp but with a backup that doesn't sound as good, but still ok though.Jan wrote:BTW: Very good guitar sound!

sound very good!!!! in my opinion need a to spread the stereo image a bit and add a little reverb to glue everything and give more depth ,but it just depend in the sound you are looking for...... happy new year !!!!
