Killswitch effect
Hello,
I want to make a killswitch-like effect, I'm sure it must have a name but I don't know. The effect would be like turning on/off the audio of the guitar in a periodic way. How could I accomplish that using software?
Thanks

Re: Killswitch effect
With a noise gate? Feed a periodic signal into the sidechain (if you find a gate with a sidechain input, that is)
Or a simple logic gate or a vca going between 0 and 100% in a modular synth.
EDIT: You only need to modulate the volume with a square wave.

On my GT-6 (Boss) this effect is called 'Slicer'. I like that effect!maghoxfr wrote:... it must have a name but I don't know.

Re: Killswitch effect
If you're looking for slice tools then give Smasher a try: http://smasher.sourceforge.net/
There's also the Glitch VST, but haven't tried that one yet: http://illformed.org/plugins/glitch/
And there's even a Linux VST that might do what you want: http://argotlunar.info/
And a killswitch on a guitar, what I usually do is to mute the neck pick-up and use my pick-up selector switch.

Thanks a lot for those links, I'll give them a try, besides they look really good. I had Argotlunar installed but didn't really know what it did, now I'm going to try it out to see if what I can do.AutoStatic wrote:If you're looking for slice tools then give Smasher a try: http://smasher.sourceforge.net/

The thing is that I have a strat, so it don't have independent volume controls for each mic, it just have "tone". I would be able to that with a Les Paul. Unless I rewire the poor thing to install a proper killswitch button, but it's already too beat up from my experimentsAnd a killswitch on a guitar, what I usually do is to mute the neck pick-up and use my pick-up selector switch.

True. And indeed, the guitars of which I mute the neck PU all have a LP-like wiring.maghoxfr wrote:The thing is that I have a strat, so it don't have independent volume controls for each mic, it just have "tone". Re: Killswitch effect
I've had some success. This is what I did:
Ingredients: calf git plugins (pulsator, gate)
In jack I hooked my guitar to the pulsator, then I activated the sidechain in the gate plugin, and connected the L channel from the pulsator to the sidechain IN of the gate. Then the gate OUT to the system.
After tweaking the settings I accomplished something very close to what I want, in fact is exactly what I want with the exception that the signal vanishes too fast, but I think that's easy to solve.
Thanks to all of you, the solution was a bit of everybody's suggestions. The sidechain ducking tutorial was big help Jeremy.

Re: Killswitch effect
Well i realized it's actually simpler than what I posted before. Just with the calf-git pulsator plugin I culd pull it off. The only thing you have to do is to connect the left output (or right, but only one output) from the pulsator to both L & R system playback ports, that way you are only listening to the pulse of 1 channel.
That's it.
That's it.
