Yoshimi soundbank: Jeanny's Genius, version 0.5

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, I am sorry if this is completely the wrong place for this message, but I didn't find a better place here. Pointers are welcome!
Jeanny's Genius version 0.5 now sports 3 patchsets and 68 single instruments, including three drumkits, tested on Yoshimi version 2.1.2, but should be compatible with version 1.5.x.

This includes the "Star choirs" as heavily used in Lovestruck:

As well as the Yoshimi sounds heard in Silver, my entry to the last open source Nexus music challenge:

and all my sounds used in Yoshimi's birthday song:

(as far as I remember only the explosive white noise effect and the main lead were from other banks).
Share and enjoy!

Hello @jeanette_c and thank you!

I support the CC BY-SA but someone made me notice that it is a bad license for presets, because it's very easy to accidentally infringe and also puts the (sometimes unreasonable) expectation to release derived works under the same license.

I'll make an example of this unreasonableness: drum loops and vocal bits used in electronic tracks are typically under a royalty free license which is incompatible with the CC BY-SA. So if someone here makes a track using a drum loop from a site like LoopMasters and one of your presets, they are legally blocked from releasing their track!

The CC BY or CC0 however do not have the same problem. Would you consider adopting one of those instead?

Hi @Basslint and many thanks for your feedback and making me aware of that oversight. I will go and change the license now. For everyone who has downloaded it already, feel free to use them in your music and license the music however you please. I will go with CC0 or GPL.

I've always regarded Yoshimi patches as instructions for the synth, not performance. Therefore all my patches are released as GPL V2 or later.

Fair enough, I took would take this interpretation - if you make a configuration file for Emacs, of course text files produced by it do not fall under the same license - but it has not been tested in courts AFAIK.
