I Ran - A Flock Of Seagulls -tutorial

Post by Gps »

I stumbled on this tutorial, but I do not understand everything.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MwI6xXZh2y0
Seems we need an real guitar and an english penny :P

We can trust this source, because I far as I understand this, these are the original band-members.

Questions.

What are those numbers ? They start at 0:48 5 -5 -5 - 5 - 7 Can I ignore those because I can't play guitar anyway, and the notes are listed above ?
Also the x on the drum parts ?, what are those ? :)

I always loved this track, but hope I will not start to cover it.
About every time I cover something I end up not being totally happy, because it does not really sound like the original.
I did learn a lot from covering stuff though, so it was not a waist of time.

Merry Christmas to my Linux musicians friends. :)

those funny numbers spoiling the horiz lines starting at about 00:59 are the fret positions you must press some finger or nose on to whenever you'll have the urge to use a bass and try to play the score while not using the score or your ears but that twonky little thingamuggin called a TAB.
In this quite interesting system (that is, interesting for people playing the instrument the given TAB is adapted for) the horiz lines (there are 4 in that one which is for a 4 stringed bass) represent strings and the numbers are the position in terms of fret distance to the zero fret where you are expected to land some suff that would hold the string still while you pluck or fiddle or hit it with another hand or nose if any available.
Since you are not in the stringed instruments pla game you probably can call it a day and send no check for the rain, merry still time ;)

This is exactly why its hard do do guitars right in a Daw.

Thank you, now get it. Will have to read it a few times for it to stick though.

One thing I always struggle with when I make a song of my own, what bpm to pick. I find it interesting this one is above 140 bpm. (146)

I find that bassline notation a tad confusing, but that might be my limited understanding of sheet music.
( and my far from perfect pitch) :)

Two times 2 connected notes. wtf :P

When I listen to it, I would not expect connected notes but just some notes closer together.
Maybe this is just another way to show those notes are played closer together timing wise. ?

Thank you , this should be interesting and help me.

I still want to this in a daw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_qj30Tx3V3s

One reason why I fail is because I don't understand guitars really. (nor tabs)

The vids you linked will help me with this.
I had already noticed that part of the rythym is that guy, "muting" and "un-muting" strings.

That might need two tracks in a daw, but that's the least of my problems.
I at first need to understand guitars.

Then try that guitar plugin suggested on this forum.

After seeing the first vid, I think i understand now those connected notes. :)

Last night before I felt asleep, I made some progress, thinking about my: the left hand vs right hand problem.

I cant play guitar, but I do know one thing.

The chord he plays, he will hit at least hit those strings with his right hand too.

Compared to a piano were all 3 strings in a chord are hit at the same time, on a guitar those 3 strings are hit in sequence.

So what I will try is to make in the piano roll, make this chords in a down stroke and upstroke position.

So if the chord is CAG the C will start a tad earlier then the A and so on, and the other way around for the upstroke.

Smallest step in LMMS is 1-192 from the top of my head, but I doubt this to be audible.
In an attempt to make wider stereo, I do remember that around 3 times 1/192 we start to hear a difference, in timing.

Thank you I have some reading to do. :)

I spoke to some body who plays guitar about Curtis Blow - The Breaks. (the strumming)

He thinks the guy is hitting all the strings, but has doubts if we can hear this.
If he is right I could ignore the strings not used to form a chord.
