Forever Alone (all FOSS, shared Ardour project)

Post by Senbee »

Hi everybody, this time I decided to share with you the entire Ardour project I recorded this song with:

Forever Alone

This is the link to the project:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/ ... sp=sharing
It's for Ardour 6.5.

The song is licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC Stefano Droghetti 2020.

I hope the lyrics are ok: English is not my native language. so sorry if something got wrong :-)

I tried to recreate a natural sound, not computer related. The only real instruments are two guitars (a folk one and an electric one). All the other instruments are free as in freedom, on Linux.

The video is made with Kdenlive (20.08.3).

Not really my genre, but I liked the 60s vibe of the song! My only note would be on drums, that sound maybe a bit too synthetic?
Really cool video too! I was going to ask how you did it, and then saw your mention of Kdenlive: you really got something interesting out of it!

Only one note: as an open source developer, I really cannot accept the "Contributions are wrong" line  (just kidding, love the lyrics! )

Thank you so much!
Yes they sound a bit synthetic, so as the bass and some other instruments coming from soundfonts. The problem is that the drums line has been generated by JJazzLab (and then hardly modified), and it's done for GM Midi drums mapping. I tried some other GM drums but they didn't sound better. Others didn't have all the drums (less drums and sounds), others had to be completely remapped and remixed. I'm not a professional so I don't have all the time needed to do all that hard job. :-(

Actually I just did it in less than 30 minutes, I needed something not completely still so I came out with this idea of writing the text in a fancy way with Libreoffice Writer, save it as PDF, convert it to jpg, crop it phrase by phrase and put it on a video in sync with music. I think I should have done much better with Blender, if I had more time.

 Well, actually the meaning of that song is "If you never do those things, you'll be forever alone!" so it actually agrees with you (and me, and all of us here I hope..!) about contributions ^_^

It is a really great pop song! And I like the lyrics too!

Really nice British-style songwriting! :D

I do wish people wouldn't use youtube for audio. Or at least keep it only as video of a recording also available elsewhere. I avoid anything connected with google as much as possible - the only thing worse is facebook

I agree, but I do this also (put things on YT).

What is the best alternative? I have used Bandcamp. But most of all I like to put it on my own Drupal site. But then people have to download, not stream.

What is the best option?

Personally, I either put things on my own website and show a link (most browsers these days will play that as it is) or I put it on my soundcloud account - although this is not ideal. Occasionally I'll put it on the music section if the internet archive. It's a bit of a fiddle to get it there, but it's probably the safest place to put things, and they don't do any snooping.

Sounds like a healthy strategy.

Don't know about the best option, but I've used SoundCloud since the beginning and I'm fine with it.

Thank you so much. It was actually one of my goals, trying to make a "good old style" pop song.
Next one, I think I'll stay in the same kind of stuff, but probably a little bit more rock. :-)
