Hi folks,
I've recently uploaded two songs to my Soundcloud page, links below:
https://soundcloud.com/pierre-dechery/raiz-rasteira
https://soundcloud.com/pierre-dechery/qual-1-estrela
Both are songs I wrote many years ago, but were kind of waiting to be recorded properly. This time I did the best I could to achieve that. I think I've spent about four weeks working in this tracks (and a couple of other ones about to be published)
1) Raiz Rasteira
This is a straight-up rock song I played with my old band, years ago. The original arrangement was maintained, except for the delay in the vocals and some other little DAW tricks. Everything was made in Ardour and I played the drums with a MIDI keyboard, using the "General MIDI" plugin - "Standard Drums" instrument. Even if this is not an impressive GUI-wise plugin, I believe it has great sounds.
(By the way, it was the first time I tried to make the drums like that and I spent a lot of time quantizing. I'm still searching for the best workflow for drums.)
The guitars were recorded with Guitarix and it took me some time to learn the software and find the right tones, but now I think this is a must-have for any guitarist who works with DAWs in Linux.
2) Qual 1 Estrela
Another old song I always loved and dreamed about producing. This time the drums were made with Hydrogen and later exported as audio to Ardour, each instrument in it's own track - to process as needed. I feel there's still work to be done in some areas (vocals and synth, maybe), but it pleases me now the way it is and I needed to stop at some point - even if it's just to come back soon. To those more acquainted with brasilian popular music, this one maybe will remind the sound of Lô Borges and the "Clube da Esquina".
... and that's it for this two songs! If you like the material please comment and hear other tracks I got there, it's all very varied and there's more to come.

Re: Two new tracks
I like your sound. These are really nice tracks. I can't understand a word of the lyrics, but that doesn't bother me.
You should maybe try the AVL Drumkits LV2. The general midi drums sound decent in Raiz Rasteria, but I think you'd get a better sound with real drum samples. The workflow with AVL Drumkits is essentially the same as what you did with the midi track. Check out the demo video here: http://x42-plugins.com/x42/x42-avldrums.
Guitarix is a fantastic tool, and you used it to great effect.
EDIT: I also love your acoustic guitar in Qual 1 Estrela. Those are nylon strings, no? How did you record that?

Re: Two new tracks
I saw you posted in the welcome board recently; Welcome to the forum!
The tracks are really nice, I especially like "Raiz Rasteira". The bassline is great too, really relaxing. I agree on Guitarix being a must-have, you've made some nice tones with it.

Re: Two new tracks
Hi milo,
Thanks for the feedback, I'll definitely checkout this drum plugin in the next project!
About the guitar, yes, it's nylon. Very popular here in Brasil - think about Bossa Nova and Samba.
For the recording I've just used a condenser mic (have a simple Behringer one, C-1 I guess) in front of the guitar. This guitar was recorded two years ago and back then I didn't have the knowledge I have now, but I'm glad it sounds good. Had to do some EQ also, as for the raw sound was not quite good.
Cheers,
Pierre

Re: Two new tracks
I have a couple of cheap nylon guitars. (My very first guitar was nylon-stringed.) I have recorded them with dynamic microphones before, and I have never been fully satisfied with the sound. I always thought it was because the guitars are cheap, but maybe I should get a condenser mic? That would probably be cheaper than upgrading the instrument!

Re: Two new tracks
I'd say yes, that's a whole new game. In my experience dynamic mics are good if you will sing right in the front of the mic, for example. Condensers, on the other hand, are much more sensitive and therefore more recommended to record acoustic guitar. But I use them for vocals also since I had mine.

I particularly liked "Raiz Rasteira" but both songs are very good. You have talent
I'm surprised the standard MIDI drums sound so good!

Re: Two new tracks
Hi @turbidh20 ,
Thanks, man. Glad you liked it!
General MIDI has nice sounds, I've used it in both songs actually. Besides the drums, the "flute" solo sound in "Raiz Rasteira" is from there. As well as the background synth in "Qual 1 Estrela". Unfortunately its interface makes it really hard to use it. There are hundreds of sounds and just one drop-down menu to search it all. Very tiresome.
I'm thinking about using Zyn in my next projects, since it seems its the best option out there.
