What is your favorite female vocalist?

What is your favorite female vocalist?
My choice for the greatest female vocalist of all time!
When she entered heaven, the angels bowed in reverence.
Anyway, I would love to hear your opinions on what your favorite song from her is..mine is "Yesterday Once More".
When did you first hear the Carpenters?

Re: What is your favorite female vocalist?
I would "vote" for Tory Amos and Kate Bush.
However, I like instrumental music most of all.
It's the best music at all!
As soon as there's a vocalist involved, the music turns out to be mostly trivial!

Aretha Franklin.
(But I agree that Karen Carpenter gets an honorable mention.)

Lots of good singers mentioned, I figured I should go with an underrated one: Shlomit Levi.

I don't know that I can pick a favorite, but I enjoy the sound of Loreena McKennitt.
@Basslint, per your suggestion I've been listening to Shlomit Levi this afternoon - I have no idea what she's saying, but I'm really enjoying what I'm hearing.

In terms of raw ability, the world's best female vocalist right now is probably Morrisette Amon, a philipino singer. Here she is singing in tagalog, a native philipino language. Warning: Amazing whistle tones to be expected.

Here she is killing a Whitney Houston tune better than Whitney:

Here she is singing the broadway song "Defying gravity" from "Wicked": (song starts at 2:42)

All live performances. Technically flawless.

Carpenter's was of the most talented Singers I ever heard. A beautiful, inspirational Voice. Such a tragedy.... Such a loss to the music world She was. Her Voice and the music She performed with her brother is still loved and cherished around the World. Even today, I occasionally pop on her music (The Carpenters), or one of her Songs comes on the Radio and it sends a tingle down my spine and old memories are evoked.

Karen Carpenter was a unique talent. Just such a naturally unadorned beautiful sound.
Ella Fitzgerald was my first thought. One of the high water marks of musicianship among vocalists and an outstanding improviser.
I like Yasuko from Melt Banana for how she fronts a band and being batshit insane.
Dolly Parton has a wonderful voice, and she wrote Jolene.

Any time people talk about the Carpenters, it makes me think of this scene:

Re: What is your favorite female vocalist?
Currently my favourite is Kacey Musgraves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS6fWkZkrFc
I've been listening to the "Golden Hour" album a couple of times a week for nearly two years and it never fails to move me and often bring tears of joy. Her voice has such a beautiful purity. Wonderful songwriter too.
And yes, Karen Carpenter was great. I still have a 7" single of Superstar, co-written by Leon Russell who also wrote "A Song For You" for The Carpenters.
BTW, this topic should be called "Who is your favorite female vocalist?" "What" is for things, "who" is for people.

Not so sure but it might have been unspecied in case someone would vote as such:sunrat wrote: ↑Sun Sep 27, 2020 3:18 am Currently my favourite is Kacey Musgraves. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IS6fWkZkrFc

Re: What is your favorite female vocalist?
Amy Lee, Pat Benetar... Undeniable elemental forces.
There were some great singers in the 60s, though it wasn't really my bag (baby).
Karen Carpenter definitely, and Judith Durham... phenomenal.
