Kumikäki - Le Bob (album made with Reaper on Linux)

Post by kirjis »

I released this instrumental funk (something like the Universal Togetherness Band meets Amiga demoscene? Nu-disco? Who knows?) album last month.
https://komitea.fi/lebob/ takes you to a jump off page to different streaming services incl. Bandcamp.

I joined FAWM (https://fawm.org) in 2018 and the album has songs from FAWM 2018 & 2019 and 50/90 2019. It's fairly minimalistic production, no song has more than 6 instrument tracks + reverb and maybe delay buses. Pretty much everything is played in, I used drum loops in two songs, though. I mixed and mastered in Reaper, too.

Equipment used:
Hardware:
Lenovo Y500 laptop from 2013
Presonus Studio 2|6 USB interface
Focal Alpha 80 monitors (measured and response equalized with miniDSP)

Fender Squier Jazz 4-string bass w/ diMarzio pickups and bypassed pots
MTD Kingston 4-string bass with bypassed pots
Epiphone Korina Explorer guitar
Epiphone EJ-200 acoustic jumbo guitar
Roland A-49 USB MIDI keyboard controller

Notable software:
Linux Mint 18.3
Reaper 5
LinVST
Jack2, Carla, Cadence, Claudia
Free u-he synths (Tyrrell, Zebralette and Podolski)
dexed dx-7 emulation
bFree Hammond emulation
Reaper plugins (of course!)
Melda productions plugins
limiter6
Kotelnikov
LUFS meter
Free impulse responses from here and there
Free drum loops
Drum samples from Samples from Mars

(There are currently remixes underway by a couple of nice artists; are you interested in remixing? Drop me a line!)

Already commented on your other thread, but after listening to the whole album I can say that it doesn't disappoint. It is awesome all the way through! It sounds more like a group performance than a solo work, which is hard to pull off.

As an aside, I notice that you are on an old version of Linux Mint. Isn't 18.3 off of official support? I moved my studio machine up to Linux Mint 19, and it is working well. I don't use the same software that you do for music production, though, so your mileage may vary. I plan to upgrade to 20 when 19 goes off of support, or when I upgrade hardware, whichever comes first. (Although I am also considering going to Debian stable for my studio machine someday.)

Amazing job, very professional and creative. Seems like you'd created your own vision of funky music, and it's a pleasant experience to hear.

I'm amazed, among other things, by the drums. There were fills that sounded so organic, how you did that with sampling?

Another thing that striked me is that you use Reaper, for it were my very first DAW, and I loved it. Sadly I couldn't find a way to use in Linux and ended up using Ardour, which I came to love too.

Thanks for the praises! Yeah, 18.3 is sort of old, I was hanging on until I got my new machine, and until I got that album out. Now I have a beefy laptop from laptopwithlinux.com and Mint 20. Although, I've tried Manjaro now on my old lappy and it feels pretty excellent. But I just got _everything_ set up on this new one, so probably not changing the OS for a couple of years, unless something very very drastic happens.

Two songs (if I remember right) have longer samples, some fills were just cut from longer pieces, but most drums have just been played in with keyboard. It's not the easiest way, but I don't like programming music, I lose all feeling immediately. I need to pound the instruments, even if it's keyboard drums.
