I've mostly been trying to emulate a rock band sound but have done a couple of EDM / electronica tracks so I can delve deeper into the DAW (Ardour 6.2) and learn some tricks. But I find it difficult to use automation creatively. My tracks sound bland and uninteresting. My two most recent attempts are below. I've automated some panning and the freq. setting in Calf Filter. What else can I do to change things up a bit?

You can duplicate some track and add it an effect like distortion, flanger, some radical compression, or lower it one octave... and then you automate the volume of that track so that it doesn't sound in certain sections, but it "jumps" to you in others...
