Can't be worse then Dedit.

You build a map for the game and then need to process it.

One thing that happens, the tools calculating what we can't see, so it will delete it.

After processing you often find out that you and the program do not agree on what we can't see.
It removes too much and instead of a nice textured surface you see a black square hole or parts of the geometry missing.

It always felt like you had to trick the program into processing the map right.

Been watching Blender tutorials, and it reminds me a bit of how you make stuff in Dedit.

Not sure how many people here will understand what I am gonna say next, but you don't solid model with Blender.
You create surface models.

Solid modelling has some advantages, but I doubt those to be relevant for what we want do with blender.
An advantage of surface models over solids, is that it takes less processing power.

You can think of it like this. A solid model is solid, a surface model is like a paper box, hollow inside.


But as others said before in this topic it's a pitfall, first you need to learn Blender and then the moddeling is gonna take allot of time, depending on what you want to do.

Just a suggestion, unless you like beating yourself up...
(no judgment from me - to each his/her own).

You (and anyone else) would be much better served diving into Blender 2.8 and beyond. As stated earlier, it's been rebuilt from the ground up. It's a whole different beast of an animal now. The Blender in your links are 'old' Blender. The very one that sent people screaming in abject fear and terror.

A good practice moving forward would be to tack 2.8 (soonish 2.9) onto Blender your searches. Otherwise you'll be setting yourself up for a world of hurt and needless cornfusion. If you have no previous investment in anything from the bygone days of Blender, then no real reason to look back.

I am not sure if I want to dive yet.

Although it helps I have worked with programs as Catia and Autocad (professional) and Dedit and 3d studio, (for fun), it also makes some things harder, because I need to learn a new way of how to do things. ( The blender way)

I also saw blender can import DXF files, which means I could start in Catia or autocad and then export to blender.

Because for some time Autocad was the most used program to make technical drawings, about every program around can read dxf files.
Also a free cad program on Linux can read dxf files.

It will be probably better though, to not use autocad, because it will only take me longer to learn blender because of it.

Fun fact autocad catia and solid works, all work about the same, but blender is different.

Thank for the tip on searching for 2.8 tutorials, watching some of the tutorials made me remember why I did not like blender.
Its frustrating, if you know how to make the shape of the outside of the starship enterprise, in autocad in lets say a few hours max, but then after two days fighting blender, you don't even have a disc shape.

Might have to go to the blender forums and ask some specific questions.

The word accurate is what I am used too, and helps me to understand Blender.

Allot of tutorials I already have watched show how to move stuff, but none of them explains how to move something 50 cm or 50 inch or what ever.

I also now understand how to move an object along an axis. Progress.

There are allot of tutorials on how to copy something but again not how to copy something over a distance.

Maybe I should stay away from what they call beginner tutorials, because they are not helping me one bit.
I do realize that accuracy in blender is less important for most stuff, but from what I heard you can make models for 3D printing in blender.

Gonna watch this next, hopeful;l it answers a few more questions.

I will start soon to see how long it gonna take me to make some canyon or sci-fi city part, and then have a fly through.

The above vid about the difference between cad and blender really helped me, it also explains when to use cad and when to use Blender.
She also asked if there were mechanical engineers in the room.
That did put a smile to my face, because that's what I am. (was) So it was the right vid for me.

Some constraints like you have in Cad programs, don't exist in blender.
Some properties of a model, you can see in a cad program don't exist in blender either.

Blender looks to me like a relative simple program, in my specific case it does not really help I am used to cad programs.
Need to switch my mind to blender mode.

It has of course also some advantages to somebody who has never worked with any 3D program.
The XYZ part is something I am used to. Blender shares at least one thing with cad programs.
Middle mouse button, if you want to move the camera. (from what angle you see the model)
Works just like this in Catia.

Even for people who never worked with 3D software, I think you can learn the basics in in just a few hours.
When it gets to rendering, it gets tricky, it's like when you mix you're music track....

That feeling it could be done better.

You probably don't understand what I mean, I am not saying Blender is inaccurate.

Something people did and probably still do, it to make a 3D model in Autocad, Catia or solidworks and then export it to 3D studio (or Blender), to make a render.
The accuracy of 3D studio is less then Autocad, but perfect to make a beautiful 3D rendering.

I got a few answers, one about all the eyeballing I see in tutorials.

If you want to 3D print something, you can't eyeball it. Then you need to be precise.

For cartoon and movies it matters much less, if it looks good it is good.

Some stuff I learned not to do in Cad programs, and programs to make maps for games, don't cause issues in blender. ( over lapping surfaces )

Blender is a great program, but its gonna take me a while to get used too.

For now its mostly frustrating, you watch a tutorial, try to do they same, and it does not work the same.
I am starting to figure out why tough.

Allot of commands have settings that are to me well hidden.

Also a command like extrude reacts different depending on how you activate it.

I got so desperate I even downloaded the manual.

Baby steps forward, today learned how to tile textures on an object.

It's a great program especially if you realize its free.

The programs I am used to (3Dcad) are anything but free. Guessing without google, Autocad 8000 euro.

Catia, if you want all modules is gonna set you back then thousands of euro.

For a company I ones talked with IBM which back then was the reseller of Catia.
After telling them all we want, there was an offer, 60.000 euro.

Another fun fact, you could choose from 4 brands of pc, of course you could use a different brand, but if you then got into trouble with the software, IBM would tell you good luck.

Things Catia can do which Autocad can't are double curved surfaces and stress-analyzing, and some more but lets stop here about Cad.

Guessing a few more days , and asking some questions, I should be close enough to actual start modelling and making a vid.

For the now the idea is some can't of looping vid, with a spectrum analyser in front. The spectrum analyser from one of the first post in this topic.

Blender is for me a very deep pitfall. I could in blender recreate the star war scene were Luke, attacks the death star.
( trench scene ) I am thinking something like that, but allot more simple, no space ships, and less detail.

For now though I am still having issues with the GUI. This has allot to do with me being more used to cad programs.
Hoping to have some kind of vid in a few weeks though.

I am getting there. Blender still feels a bit weird in some aspects, but I need to make a plan / decision now.

Am I going for something like the trench on the death star but allot simpler or a sci fi corridor or a valley or a sci fi city thingy.

A sci fi corridor might be the easiest to start with, so leaning towards that.
