Compatibility of USB audio sound card BOSS ME-80

Hello fellow musicians,

TL;DR:I'd like to have some other - more experienced - people to back my assumption that the BOSS ME -80 multi effect board is _not_ compatible/usable via its USB audio interface. I already found some threads regarding ME80 but they didn't really help much.

My background:
I started to dig into the topic of recording music for private purposes. In more detail I want to create some backing tracks in order to play to them ( I play guitar and I'd like to practise singing). So my current working setup is:
* A RaspberryPi 4B 4GiB w/ Raspbian
* I rely on ALSA and JACK
* Reaper DAW
* A Scarlett 2i4 USB audio interface
* An old Technics K1000 keyboard connected to the Scarlett 2i4
* A general purpose dynamic mic connected to the Scarlett 2i4
* A BOSS ME-80 guitar effects processor

The problem:
So everything works fine as long as I use the Scarlett 2i4 audio interface as input device. But since it "only" has two inputs I wanted to connect the ME-80 via USBin order to record my guitar with it. The ME-80 supports MIDI & has a internal sound card. I successfully use it on M$ Windows (there is a dedicated driver which makes the ME80 audio output play through my monitors).

So now I wanted to see if it is working on my Raspbian (alternatively on my second PC running a Ubuntu 18.04 x64). I plugged it in and its immediately recognized by ALSA and also visible in QJackCTL. However I don't get it working to play the sound of my guitar. And I have a suspicion: The USB audio card of the ME-80 is "not compatible" with the default ALSA drivers. I think that because both "alsamixer" and QJackCTL do only show the support for "MIDI" but there are no controls for AUDIO. Here are some command line outputs to support my hypothesis:

I also attached some screenshots of QJackCTL. Here I configured the Scarlett 2i4 to be the default device and I navigated into the "Connection" settings. Here in the ALSA tab I only see "MIDI" but I would have expected to see some AUDIO as well. In alsamixer I also see _no_ volume controls. There is a message that says: "There are no volume controls for ths device".

So to end this message: I think that the ME-80 USB audio interface is only partly "supported" by the "default USB drivers" of Raspbian/Linux. I get the same results on my Ubuntu 18.04 machine. Is there anything that you could suggest me to configure/to check? I'm no Linux newbie but I don't know where to search for further settings that could make the ME-80 run?

The good news is it's likely that you're completely wrong :) The ME-80 appears in proc/asound/cards.

I think you want to use the Scarlett and the ME-80 at the same time? First of all check the ME-80 is working by selecting it as the JACK device in QjackCtl. JACK can only use one device at a time.

I was going to get to that once it was verified the ME-80 was working with JACK. To clarify this :

JACK can only use one sample clock at a time. Using multiple devices involves a master/slave type of setup, with e.g. audioadapter providing an input re-sampled to sync with the 'master' clock i.e. the device that JACK is running on.

sorry for the delay but during the weeks I'm busy and usually do not find enough time to report.
I think you want to use the Scarlett and the ME-80 at the same time?
Yes that was my intention. I thought I could run the Scarlett as "main device" and route the output of the USB soundcard of the ME-80 to it using QJackCTL.

So I tried your suggestions to run the ME-80 as "the only" device but the jack server start fails.
I've tried to play with different settings in QJackCTL's setup window but none of them worked.

I also tried to use the ME-8 0 with REAPER and Audacity. In short: I configured the programs to use ALSA as driver and then selected the ME80 entry found by the DAW software. But when I click "OK" then REAPER freezes & I have to end the process manually. Audacity does not freeze or break but there comes no sound/input from the configured ME80. I've verified that I setup the DAW correctly since when using the Scarlett2i4 it works.

I'm actually thinking about writing the Roland corporation (who build the ME-80) an email to ask them about the USB specification for the ME-80. I know that many of the "BOSS" devices work out of the box. I think with ME-80 its different for the lsusb command from above has some entries like "Unrecognized interfaxe <some hex value>". I'm not familiar with the USB specification at all - so I don't know what this actually means.

So I actually don't even know the right question to ask. Is this "problem" about the ME-80 not implementing some USB standards or ALSA standards? I mean when using ALSA there needs to be some kind of protocol and the sound card on ME80 would need to implement such a protocol in order to work. How is such a protocol called?

So for now I'll see and check what I can do.

if i remember right some Boss/Roland devices need to receive some output urbs first before they start filling input urbs.
This requires a patch to the usb audio driver. in your case:

Hi folks, after two weeks of absence I'm back (again).

@Drumfix : Thanks for that mention. I checked your suggestions and it seems that this "fix" is already part of the Linux kernel.

And for the rpi-4.19 branch in the kernel these lines are there since many years. However I may dig into debugging this one time.

So for now I'd like to thank you for all your suggestions and help but I want to focus on playing my Instrument. I will use the GUITAR/REC out of the ME-80 and plug it into one of the inputs of my Scarlett2i4. I guess that's what audio interfaces are for xD.

Special thanks also to Jan who created a project called jmididevice. He answered me some questions aside this thread and I found his project very interesting since he is using the MIDI-part of the BOSS ME-80.

The Boss ME-80 is not a USB class compliant device. It requires a proprietary driver to run on MacOS. Has someone written a driver for it and incorporated it into ALSA (I didn't see it in their list)? If not, wouldn't that have to be done before any additional configuration could be fruitful?

BOSS devices actually mostly UAC1 compatible. They just have vendor-specific bInterfaceClass and bInterfaceProtocol. And Linux already have the following quirk for years:

The only problem with BOSS devices, as already mentioned by @Drumfix, is that they require that playback stream is started first. But implicit feedback implementation in the linux kernel starts the capture stream first, which is more correct and supported by all other devices.
