So, I did a thing this weekend.
Not entirely sure how it started. I had some plugins I wanted to try, maybe it went from there.
Anyway, after a while I settled on trying to "complete" (loosely defined) a few short songs in a very limited amount of time. Meaning that some things ended up the way they are as I didn't bother redoing much.
The plugins were great by the way, especially happy with the guitar sound I got with a heavily detuned guitar, Guitarix LittleBigMuff and the new Grind Machine III.

Yeah, the punchiness is definitely something to aim for when doing more agressive music.
I don't know if airy is a word I would use
but I think I understand what you mean. Getting the punch and being able to hear what is going on don't always mix (which I sometimes use to my advantage).
The drums are done with the VST plugin Addictive Drums 2. It's the only plugin where I resort to a wine compatibility layer now. It works but there is always some trouble with it. There are some Linux alternatives but I don't think they are quite there yet in terms of quality... (would love to be proven wrong though, especially for acoustic pop drums)
