Amazon Deep Composer

Amazon is launching machine learning composing service. Haven't tested, so I can't tell anything more about. Just wanted to share link with you, for discussion.

If at least it could use a regular MIDI keyboard and its knobs/sliders assignments. But no, one has to get an AWS keyboard at $99 to try it out.

The demos sound less than good. And it's proprietary software so I wouldn't touch it.

That talk seems something out of a cyberpunk movie

Many sequencers allow you to map the keyboard to a scale, so that you never play "wrong" notes. "Improvise" with that along with something like MMA and you can write your own tool-assisted, cheap sounding music on GNU/Linux, without ML.

Semi-jokes aside, there's a whole world of computer/generative/algorithmic music out there. Not saying what they are doing is not innovative, just that music is a spiritual endeavor and what these things try to do is not music.

Now you can say I am close minded, a neo-Luddite, whatever, but (as a programmer myself) I simply am not interested in stuff made by a bunch of instructions. Maybe I won't be able to tell an original human composition from a machine-generated one in a couple of years, but that's bound to happen due to the "Library of Babel" effect (Borges) and says nothing about what effect this music will have on society. Will it be so beautiful as to stop war and make people marry? If not, whatever, IA dude.

It sounds like form Amazon's perspective this is more about pushing the boundaries of AI than about making music. Music is the gimmick, or the vehicle, to push the AI envelope. Yes, they might sell a few keyboards, but it doesn't really seem like that's their focus, at least from the website. I think, on the whole, that this is an interesting and useful, hopefully fruitful effort. AI technology has a lot of promise to do good in the world (and evil too, like all effective tools). I'm glad that a company with $$$ is willing to use some of their influence to move the technology forward, and if they can make a few bucks doing it, then congratulations to them and their shareholders.

As for me, I'll still be in my basement making music the "old fashioned" way. Not because I'm anti-AI or anything, but because I simply love making music. It's hard to imagine a computer algorithm really loving anything.

Maybe someday guys like us who make music will be the holdouts, using old technology for novelty or interest's sake. Or because we love it. Like people who ride horses for enjoyment, not because it's the most efficient way to get around.

But I don't think music as we know it is going away. It's too close to the soul, and human beings won't accept music that doesn't hit their emotions in some way.

I wonder if it'll be possible to add an FX rack to the AI processing. Fuzzy AI, distorted AI, flanger AI, delayed AI, etc.
