Won't search VST2 or VST3 paths

What other apps and distros do you use to round out your studio?

Won't search VST2 or VST3 paths

Post by rhollan »

I am running Carla un der Ubuntu 19.04 and have enabled experimental support. I tried to get it to load a third-party vst3 plugin, but it won't search the vst3 paths specified. I have verified this running Carla under strace. I have also verified permissions It doesn't even seem to try to look for them when I click Refresh in the plugin window.

Any ideas?

My version of Carla (2.0.90 aka 2.1-alpha2) seems to do. When I click on the button "Add plugin" a dialog window opens and under "Plugin format" is says, among others, "VST3".

@rhollan: can you point me to a free VST3 plugin so I can test it?

Windows VST in an Ubuntu 19.04 Linux environment using the Carla bridge running under Wine. Neither VST2 or VST3 are found: any added directories are not searched. I MAY have a permissions problem with Carla's hidden directories causing this, and I'll have to check tonight. It's the Voxengo bass management VST for Windows (https://www.voxengo.com/product/bms/). One can download a version for free for evaluation.

Installed said Voxengo thingy to my Windows hard drive, copied the BMS.vst3 file to my VST folder. Let Carla look for VST3 plugings. Couldn't find it. Renamed it to BMS.dll, didn't work either. So this VST is a querky piece of sh**** or Carla can't handle VST3 well. I hate VST's that have a Windows installer. I just want a standalone .dll file to drop in ~/vst.

I tried the U-he vst3 versions, and almost all worked
in linux Reaper, with a quick knob-twiddle-preset_load test. Only
ColourCopy misbehaved.
I tried the vst2 versions of ACE and Hive synths, with Twangstrom Reverb
in Carla, seemed to work fine.

https://u-he.com/products/

U-he linux installers are a script, which creates a .u-he
folder, holding each plugin and it's content in a subfolder,
and also makes a .vst/u-he folder
containing links from each installed plugin.

Once installed, try the vst 2 and 3 demos in Carla.
Cheers

Tried the 32 bit VST2 version of Voxengo BMS and that one worked in Carla. For what it is worth...
