KX Studio at the End of Standard Support - what now?
Dear Linuxicians,
I used KX Studio for about the last 3 years and it worked so fantastic good, it was such an inspiration in its possibilities and it still helps me digging deep into music (and not too much in linux) allmost every day. But now updates are rare, some still come allong - sometimes ... firefox moans not to be up2date ...
I never tried out any other distibution because KX did such a lucky start with Linux on my musicPC .
I have AVL 2019 running on another PC - which is also known as great audio distro - but I miss Claudia! Everything I wanted (allmost) started up and connected automaticaly (different synts, salamanderpiano.sfz on different midichannels and so on ...) that even my 7 year old children could fire up the midipiano.
So what now? Wait and hope for FalkTX until later in 2019? ... or try to port all that to AVL when possible at all (eg. ladish?) ?
.... or start from scratch with Mint or Mate + KX repo and tweak arround with the kernel - never did that... ?
Did someone else here went thorough that?
Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

Re: KX Studio at the End of Standard Support - what now?
You can take any distribution if it includes the KXStudio repositories (https://kx.studio/Repositories) / packages (for example https://www.archlinux.org/packages/comm ... _64/carla/, https://gpo.zugaina.org/media-sound/carla, ...).
See for example here: GNU/Linux Debian installing >> Linux Audio Workstation LAW viewtopic.php?p=92293#p92293.
Or wait until FalkTX releases a new KXStudio.

Re: KX Studio at the End of Standard Support - what now?
Can't you just upgrade your kxstudio install? (assuming you mean the ubuntu based iso)
Could be a big jump to current but might be fairly painless.

So now...
I hope this community starts to talk a lot much more about 'LibraZiK - audio studio"
LibraZiK is a digital audio-software music studio and related documentation, and is based on Debian GNU/Linux Stable.
Although it is oriented towards French speaking users (and that is the reason why it is not included in DistroWatch), the non-French users will want to install the "librazik-apt-nonfr" package and use an online translator for the official (French) documentation. And the documentation is quite impressive, to say the least. And Librazik repositories are as big as, if not bigger than KXStudio. And actively supported as well.

LibraZiK is a real good distribution - I use it for professional radio work, with very good results. My favourite audio distribution.thetotalchaos wrote: LibraZiK is a digital audio-software music studio and related documentation, and is based on Debian GNU/Linux Stable.

Re: KX Studio at the End of Standard Support - what now?
If you really need newer versions of software that is not in your current distro then I'd do a clean install of Ubuntu (after a good backup on an external USB drive of course!) and activate the KXStudio repository. But do you really need that latest version of certain software? I use Chrome (not Chromium) as a browser and you do not need to use the version from the standard repo (can't remember how). I don't care much for software versions that are slightly newer than the one I have. If it ain't broken, then don't try to fix it.SirAmpersand wrote:Dear Linuxicians,

Re: KX Studio at the End of Standard Support - what now?
recently upgraded my 16.04-based Ubuntu installation with KXStudio repos to 18.04-based.
no major problems so far, even wine (which was the most troublesome when i tried to upgrade a year ago) works.
can't say anything about DE though, because i don't use KDE/Neon, using LXDE instead.

Re: KX Studio at the End of Standard Support - what now?
I talked to falkTX two weeks ago on IRC and I don't get the point here. He will start again with KXStudio soon, that's what he told me. BTW my feeling is that he never stopped. He was working on Carla all the time.So what now? Wait and hope for FalkTX until later in 2019? ... or try to port all that to AVL when possible at all (eg. ladish?) ?

But it's French centric, which can be a problem for those who learned German or Spanish as their foreign language. It looks like I'd suggest you to get ROSA Linux or Astra Linux for your home office, basing this advice on how is it convenient to use within borders of Russia.mk1967 wrote:LibraZiK is a real good distribution

As different as KXStudio is, compared to Debian or Ubuntu. You have the applications, the kernel, the tweaks and the documentation, that you need to transform vanilla Debian into professional audio tailored operating system.English Guy wrote: How different is Librazik from standard Debian please?

Re: KX Studio at the End of Standard Support - what now?
The answer for me is ... wait.
I am not using my KXStudio computer for a high-end webserver, or for penetration testing for the NSA. It is a nice, quiet, PC sitting in my office behind a firewall where the wav files I record are unlikely to attack it.
I love KXStudio and (until he canceled all the auto paypal donations) I donated to his work. When he's ready again, I will continue to donate. I also donate to Ardour which also supports Jack.
So I will just wait!

Very smart decision if you ask me. Considering upgrading an OS: if it ain't broken don't try to fix it.bmarkham wrote:The answer for me is ... wait.

Re: KX Studio at the End of Standard Support - what now?
I am an experienced Debian and audio user but have forgotten most of my schoolboy French. If I installed Librazik is it enough like Debian that I can just use it? Does it use standard Debian repos? That was the thrust of my original question, sorry for being unclear (I have never used the KXStudio distro, only the repos, so the comparison doesn't help).
