Re: Cut Through Recordings Plug-ins available in LV2 Format
Haven't seen those before, they look interesting. Is this an announcement of them being supported on linux or just the lv2 format (ie are they also available as vst on linux)?

It is great news, @stanlea already posted it here: viewtopic.php?f=59&t=19854
Not sure if the Mods want it in both places...?

News or ads ? The question is not clear for me. My first intention was to post here, but after the last debate I thought it was wise to avoid any commercial related post here, althought I don't really agree.

I would rule 'if it costs something it goes to ads'.stanlea wrote:News or ads ? The question is not clear for me. My first intention was to post here, but after the last debate I thought it was wise to avoid any commercial related post here, althought I don't really agree.

Re: Cut Through Recordings Plug-ins available in LV2 Format
I'd say either 'Linux Music News', 'Plugins, Effects and Instruments' or 'Marketplace' are good places for this topic.
Perhaps we should get rid of 'Linux Music News' - anything posted there probably has a more accurate subforum available.
Moving this one to 'Plugins, Effects and Instruments'

Re: Cut Through Recordings Plug-ins available in LV2 Format
I used to look through the news section for figuring out what to mention in the open source musician podcast. I guess I'll just have to do more hunting now. :\
perhaps we can tag news like headlines in each subform with a [NEWS] prefix or something

Re: Cut Through Recordings Plug-ins available in LV2 Format
Once, this forum was a place were Open Source enthusiasts meat each other and talk about open source music software, and how we could improve it. This is more and more gone, lost over the time. As more members we've here, as more the acceptance for Close Source and Commercial Ware steps in. Now, it's more a place were people meat each other to talk about proprietary software and publish news for companies, and believe, that are good news, the the Commercial World take over Linux, and, there seems to be no way to stop this thinking.
So, do what ever you want, the good times here been gone anyway, enjoy your KVR clone for Linux.
Maybe add a HTML Add frame, so you could make some money by yourself as well.
Just, it may be a good idea to edit the forum goals

Re: Cut Through Recordings Plug-ins available in LV2 Format
In order to keep promoting the spirit of FLOSS, maybe a little labelling brainstorming could help. I suggest 2 (two) Linux news sections : News FLOSS, News Non-FLOSS : easy and handy for every one. Than change Marketplace to Commercial Software Discussions. Is it so hard ?tramp wrote:Once, this forum was a place were Open Source enthusiasts meat each other and talk about open source music software, and how we could improve it. Re: Cut Through Recordings Plug-ins available in LV2 Format
I really don't see what the fuss is about, this isn't opensourcemusicians.com. What's the problem with viewing a news announcement and seeing if it is Free or not? Something that is released for linux is news regardless of whether it is Free, if you choose to place restrictions on what you use then that's your choice and most people here respect that but I don't see why that would need to dictate this forum. You're still free to collab, share code, etc etc, why does there need to be this hard line of separation for announcements? I'm fully in favour of obvious advertisements/paid shilling being in a particular place but it's tiresome to see every announcement of a non-Free software devolving in to this petty and pointless debate. Rant all you want but don't do it in the announcement thread unless there is an obvious problem, it doesn't help anyone and it is more or less trolling.

Same thing happened with food. Giant stores, as well astramp wrote: the Commercial World take over Linux,
small specialist shops everywhere, and farmers markets are common.
Doesn't stop me from raising free berries, grapes, apples, cherries, pears, quince,
and the makings of a good salsa.
You could have your own forum at kvr, like zynaddsubfx does:
https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=47,
and/or
contribute to coding discussions:
https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=33
make announcements/share experience in the effects section:
https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=6
there is a DoItYourself section where your knowledge of
circuits and hardware could be shared:
https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewforum.php?f=180
Open source Surge topic has 50 pages now:
https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopi ... 1&t=511922
Air Winows open-source dev just starts a topic as each new plugin is ready:
https://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopi ... 6&t=523207
Potential to grow your userbase, make friends etc etc
Cheers

Re: Cut Through Recordings Plug-ins available in LV2 Format
I suppose I wasn't around on those old golden times? I've started with music few years ago.tramp wrote:Once, this forum was a place were Open Source enthusiasts meat each other and talk about open source music software, and how we could improve it. Personally I think purpose of this forum is provide information and channel for discussion. And target is linux users. Linux itself is libre, but not everything running on it. If we get more commercial software vendors supporting linux, we have possibility to get more linux users. More linux users mean more people potentially donating money to interesting projects, less money for Microsoft and Apple, so I think it is definitely good thing to happen.
I personally think libre operating system is more important than having some particular software free. We have tons of libre music software, and looks like number of options there is not getting any lower. And if we have more linux users, there will be more interest for libre music software running on linux.

Understanding, learning, tinkering, optimizing, ..., which is made possible by open source software, is becoming more and more irrelevant.tramp wrote:Once, this forum was a place were Open Source enthusiasts meat each other and talk about open source music software, and how we could improve it. As I perceive it, you want a finished product (LAW) which is like the known one (operating system/software/...), only better and simpler - it should do what I want: automatically.
Collected knowledge, among other things documentation, is increasingly badly talked about and considered outdated, no longer necessary, ... titled / looked at <EDIT>(the users of this forum, for example, or the GNU/Linux operating system, ...)</EDIT>. This may make new users insecure.

The creative playing with the operating system, the joy of freedom and the sometimes accompanying tedious hacking (unfinished > inventing), the bringing in of different projects (inventing/creating something together), the new development of (audio) programs, ... is moving more and more into the background and one enjoys the freeware/purchase software which can now be used under GNU/Linux.

Re: Cut Through Recordings Plug-ins available in LV2 Format
I also fail to understand the hostility towards closed software.. IMO the more software we have available on linux, the better, be that libre, closed, free or pay.

"Our mission is to facilitate discussion, learning, and discovery of music making on the Linux platform."
IMO there is often too much aggression and rudeness on this forum, which makes it less appealing for me to read and contribute to

Captain Pedantic reporting:
That said (no need to thank me, just Captain Pedantic duty!) I have nothing against discussing non-free software in this forum, but I am OK in setting up and using forum sections as long as these sections make it easier for users to follow the topics they are interesting for them. I do not think there are huge issues with how the forum sections are set up currently.
Not exactly. The vanilla Linux kernel has proprietary binary blobs into it. But you can install "cleaned up" libre versions in most distributions. It is possible, and actually not hard, to make a fully libre OS, but I do not think that a libre OS is what of must of us use. I don't, for example.tavasti wrote:Linux itself is libre
Don't put too much faith into that. Users are really really not that likely to donate any money.tavasti wrote:More linux users mean more people potentially donating money to interesting projects, less money for Microsoft and Apple, so I think it is definitely good thing to happen.
