I currently have Linux Mint 17. See:

As I read on the internet that might be a problem for upgrading to Linux Mint 19.1. Maybe I should just upgrade to Linux Mint 18 and leave it at that?

I just found the number of the motherboard by using the program Hardinfo. See:

OK. The specifications are here. It can take 8GB ram.

You want 240 pin 800MHz Non-ECC Un-buffered DDR2 ram.

This board is 64 bit, so you could think about going to a 64 bit operating system. As Lyberta said with PAE you could use all 8GB with a 32 bit OS, so you don't have to.

I would think you want a more recent system than one based on Ubuntu 14.04. 14.04 will stop being supported in April.

I just now bought and installed two extra new 2 GiB Ram cards. Result:

Code: Select all

total used free shared buffers cached
Mem: 5160136 1707856 3452280 154944 109748 909236
-/+ buffers/cache: 688872 4471264
Swap: 2086908 0 2086908

Good job! That should run a lot better.

Code: Select all

Swap: 2086908 0 2086908
That's what you want -- no swap space used.

It's perfect for now. Thanks for the help. :D

Maybe I will upgrade later, but first I want to play around somewhat and learn more about how things work.

I have bought another RAM card today for 2 Euro at the thrift shop. Its codename is:

M2OAD2G314176|1B52 DDR2 533(4) 1GX16 S/N:712TH (ADQKD1A16) by K DATA

Would it be useful/safe to place this card in the one remaining slot?

If it fits it's safe. The risk I referred to in a previous post was the risk of wasting money, not damage to the hardware. :) This is a 533 MHz stick. Dealing with the speed of the memory bus can involve going into the BIOS, which could be a bit complicated for you at the moment. You may see the memory speed on the POST screen, or you may have an ASUS splash screen, which again involves the BIOS. If you don't know what I'm talking about then you're not at the stage to mess with these things. :)

There's no harm in trying it.

I am happy with how the computer works without the extra RAM-stick, so I better leave it as it is. Don't want to mess with the BIOS if it ain't necessary.

Further: is it a bad idea to store RAM-sticks in a glass jam pot (because of damage by static electricity)?

I don't know about glass. It might be better to store it in a static proof bag.

I have put the old RAM-sticks in the plastic bag that the computer store used for my new RAM-sticks. Recovered the bag from the bin. That should be OK.

You could possibly find out what speed your memory is running at with Hardinfo. If it's 800MHz then putting a 533MHz stick in will slow the memory bus down. If it's 533 then the stick will be fine. I'm not sure that going from 800 to 533 would be that noticeable. On my computer I have all different speeds of sticks. It runs at the speed of the slowest and it's fine. :)

Hardinfo doesn't mention the speed of the sticks. And trying out commands in the Terminal gives "speed: unknown".

Adding the extra RAM-stick gives:

That's showing less ram. What is hardinfo or a command line tool saying about memory now?
