I see, I had to do them one at a time. Now the last one gives:

Code: Select all

# dmidecode 2.12
SMBIOS 2.5 present.

Handle 0x0023, DMI type 16, 15 bytes
Physical Memory Array
	Location: System Board Or Motherboard
	Use: System Memory
	Error Correction Type: None
	Maximum Capacity: 2 GB
	Error Information Handle: Not Provided
	Number Of Devices: 2

That's it. This:

Code: Select all

   Maximum Capacity: 2 GB
   Error Information Handle: Not Provided
   Number Of Devices: 2
tells us the maximum capacity.
EDIT: Technically that is saying you can have two 1GB sticks. I used dmidecode when I added more memory to my machine. Although dmidecode tells me the maximum capacity is 8GB, I've got 11GB (4+4+2+1) and it's stable. So dmidecode is not reliable. In your machine another 1GB stick will definitely work. 2GB isn't much, so if you find another computer at a good price with 8GB, go for it.

I think the best thing then is to look for two secondhand RAM cards of 2 Gb each. Than I can keep my old desktop computer for some years to come. Do those RAM cards always fit?

OK well a 2GB desktop stick is about £3, so you could try adding it to the 1GB and if it works get another one.

I also like second hand equipment. It's for fun, I don't need to keep up with the Joneses.

Is this an improvement? Looks like just one RAM card of 2 GiB and three empty slots...

You've doubled your memory, so that's an improvement. If it's 32 bit hardware you can have 4GB ram, so you can put another 2GB stick in this machine.

You can have 64 GiB of RAM on 32 bit hardware using PAE and it is enabled by default on most Linux distros nowadays. But individual processes will still get 4 GiB of virtual space.

True, but it's unlikely the motherboard would support 64GB ram. The question is how big a stick each slot will take.

@LinMusGuy One way to find out how much ram your computer will take is to find out the exact model number which is probably on a sticker out of sight. Then look up the model number online. I was hoping to spare you that by using dmidecode which works on server grade hardware but going by my tests it isn't reliable for lower level hardware. It under reported the maximum ram on my computer.

The processor in your new computer is capable of 64 bit. Whether the rest of the hardware is I don't know. If you can find the manufacturer's specifications online this will tell you the maximum ram.

One approach I often use is ... try it. :) You'd be taking a small risk trying a 4GB stick, but if it works you can have a decent amount of memory.

Another approach would be to try a 2GB stick (that will work), then another, then another and you'd have 8GB.

My "new" computer is working much better already. I have had no more problems with loading and playing soundfonts.

If I decide to add some more 2GiB Ram cards what do I have to look for to get the rights ones. Maybe I will just buy them new, when I know what I need.

Another question: I currently run an old Linux Mint version (see below). Would it make much difference to upgrade to a newer Linux Mint version?

Code: Select all

Linux 3.13.0-24-generic i686

NAME="Ubuntu"
VERSION="14.04, Trusty Tahr"
ID=ubuntu
ID_LIKE=debian
PRETTY_NAME="Ubuntu 14.04 LTS"

It would probably be fine to upgrade; the benefits would be the security updates and newer packages. Given how old your hardware is, I suggest trying the XFCE edition, which is likely lighter weight than some of the other options: https://blog.linuxmint.com/?p=3671

For what it's worth, I recently switched to XFCE on Ubuntu 18.08 and I'm more happy with the performance than the Budgie desktop that I was using before.

To answer your question about buying memory, just make sure it is DDR2 so that it fits in the slot, and ideally it should be the same speed as your existing memory.
