From the dusty archives of Folderol Towers

Post by folderol »

I sort of found an old track of indeterminate age, and thought I'd like to try a remix, so looked for the project folder. It wasn't there! That was a bit of a shock, as I never delete these, so how it came to be missing is a mystery. It would have just been possible to just keep listening to the final audio but more tedious than I fancied. At this point I didn't know just how old it was - the audio had a file date in 2010, but I suspected it was older. Eventually I remembered I had a compressed archive of my very early pre-linux work, and there it was. Well, there was a not quite kosher MIDI file. This has the last modified date in 1994! Importing it into Rosegarden produced a lot of strange bits of tracks separated from the actual notes, and no sign of track names, but it was enough to get started.
That was about a month ago. I now have the entire recording, expanded and Yoshimified (the original would have been a mix of Sound Canvas and SY22).

So without further ado:

This is great fun. I love reading about the great effort you put into revivifying a musical project from nearly three decades ago. I wonder if I could find any of my midi files from the nineties, maybe I should try.

Very nice! Not my kind of music but I really appreciate how you created a mood. You are a very good music-storyteller, no lyrics needed.

I love the backstory, to which I can really relate!
I have a ton of MIDIs that are 20 years and older too, and sometimes digging back into them I find things I'd really love to "revive" someday.

Just a little extra detail...
When I transitioned from the Acorn Archimedes series to a PC running Linux I quickly discovered the files weren't quite MIDI, so while keeping the zipped archive anyway, I actually transferred the project data by connecting the Acorn machine MIDI out to the PC MIDI in, setting Rosegarden to record, and the 'Inspiration' program to play. This was not a speedy process

Me too. Naming a midi track something, but looking for it by a different name.

Tube way army- are Friends electric.

Gary Numan - are Friends electric

Or did I name that track just, are friends electric?
