Rest In Peace (sad ballad)

Post by jeanette_c »

Hey hey, this is Rest In Peace:
https://youtu.be/h_BIv0tBEAg
I had recorded and finished the song on Wednesday and Thursday, still unsure about the title. As I put it to rest I went over to the BBC radio website and saw the news about the death of queen Elizabeth. Thus by sad accident the song found a good title and place.
Musically it inherits from several places, a little baroque tint dressed in a starless creation by King Crimson, perhaps describes it best.
Instruments used: DrumGizmo with the Aasimonster2 kit, purposefully processed to give it that old unasuming sound, setBfree, the free Gigatron Mellotron sample library and an SFZ bass, which might be from the No Budget Band, a Rickenbecker. A commercial piano and rhodes gigasample and the synth line courtesey of the Behringer Neutron.
It's good to be back, even with such a sad song after the long summer break.
Best wishes, Jeanette

What a good composition! And arrangement. Nice lead sound. Nice organ. The bass and drums are well programmed. Well, I'll stop singling out the various parts because I think it's overall a great piece! The mixing is top-notch, I would get lost trying to balance all those voices properly, especially since some of them compete for the same space. Glad that you are still making instrumental prog compositions, I like your pop work too but this is the kind of music I enjoy the most.

Many thanks @Basslint ! I thought I'd done something very wrong with this track. I know the mixing is particular to say the least. I was purposefully going for an old taken aback sound with this.
Thanks for your very warm words. I think you might also like what's coming up. Not as 70s inspired as this one, but definitely somewhat proggy and the next one will be instrumental, too. :)
Best wishes, Jeanette

I'm afraid this one just doesn't work for me. Maybe it's too close to events - someone who was the background to my entire life is being taken away today.

Thanks for still commenting Will. I sympathise with your perspective. I was shocked when I read the news. Quite incredulous for a moment, though I can hardly claim that her presence was as immediate and significant to me as it would be to anyone from the UK.

Loads of melancholy and some 70s vibe. Very very nice mixing and I like the sound choices a lot.

Great to hear new stuff from you @jeanette_c!

Anything that ships a good ol' Mellotron is always welcome! Great composition and arrangement as usual. But maybe a bit too "uplifting" to be a sad RIP song? Maybe it's because I was expecting something along the lines of "candle in the wind", but this feels more like a serene 70s instrumental.

Hey @Rainmak3r , many thanks for the comments. It's funny, I would have put this opinion the other way around. I guess there's no accounting for taste. I never found candle in the wind particularly sad. Maybe my baroque turn of mind. Well, in the end it doesn't matter what I oppine about music, not even my own. I'm just happy when a song finds a taker, whatever associations one might have.
My current song also brings in a little audible mellotron. Especially with the choir, I like to slip it in as an extra layer, the strings and flute I usually expose more.
