Hey hey, here's my new addition to the weekend: Dancing on 3rd street
https://youtu.be/GcYAcvUBaSM
It's a danceable tune, not EDM but definitely pop. I didn't know where that song would go when I began. The original inspiration is still in the name. An ellusion to a radioplay series. But in the end it all went another way. I took reference/inspiration from Britney Spears' Better:
https://youtu.be/ofDdhZw4bkU
The intention was to create a modern sound with a subtle but shaking bass and direct clean sound overall. Apparently I didn't manage it all. My reverb probably need sidechain compression to better keep the balance between reverb and raw sound. It's still a lot more modern than my usual stuff.
If you think it's worth it, I'd appreciate it very much if you'd donate a cup of tea or something on Paypal to:

Special vocal processing courtesey of Csound.
Yoshimi for main FM-pluck and other pluck layering.
LinuxSampler: for firing off Csound FX (risers) and xylophone
Hexter: FM-marimba
Hardware: Microwave Xt for the fifth pluck and one bass.
Make Noise 0-Coast for sub bass (808-kick like bass)
MiniBrute 2s for the other bass (do you see the drift?)
Roland JV-1080 for some drums and bass accent
Behringer RD-8 for true 808 sounds
Loads of LADSPA plugins. I can only thank the power of those plugins toi have turned the vocals into what they are now.
Lyrics:
The sun goes down on another day,
The mice scurry into safety.
Your hole awaits, just as dull and grey,
But sonn you will be free.
-
Close your eyes
And dress to the beat.
You'll mesmerize
When you flash your feet.
-
Dance on third street!
And be the queen you are!
Oh oh
You'll rule the neighbourhood.
Your swaying hips will reign supreme,
Your moves are the law of the land.
Shake it 'til you break the seam,
The world is in your hand.
-
Close your eyes
And dress to the beat.
You'll mesmerize
When you flash your feet.
-
Dance on third street!
And be the queen you are!
Oh Oh
You'll rule the neighbourhood.

Best wishes, Jeanette

That is a cool fun track! Great song, and I like the "plucks" a lot, really nice programming overall! The production is top notch (as always), extremely crisp!
You have a personal singing style, it is airy and flowing. It adds character to the song.

Hey @oscillator, for that I will personally hand you a medal for kindness. <3 I'm glad I did so many layers in places, which gloss over the worst of the problem. The track was fun though!oscillator wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 8:47 pm ...

Thanks all for your kind words. I hope that this piece has tought me more discipline in mixing and also in writing to some extent. It's always good to have all your informed ears and minds listening and commenting.

Re: Dancing on 3rd street
Very good production, as always. I still have no clue how you do it.
It's good to hear you singing again! But why are the vocals mixed so silently (especially compared with the reference track)? I think you shouldn't be so shy and you can give the vocals a more prominent place in the mix.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to your next song!

Wow, I didn't notice that at all. I have no clue what problems you are trying to get rid of. In any case: you can also try out different microphones (condensor mics, headsets, whatever you can find) and microphone positions. I've noticed that can make a big difference (but given the quality of some of your recordings, I think you already know this).jeanette_c wrote: ↑Mon May 02, 2022 10:02 pm I'm glad I did so many layers in places, which gloss over the worst of the problem.

Re: Dancing on 3rd street
Hey @PieterPenninckx , thanks for your kind words and the good advice. I actually never tried a headset mic, it might actually work to my advantage, if I can hook it up to my computer. My normal mic is a membrane, but a cheap one and my recording conditions are suboptimal. Besides that: I still haven't done much in the way of vocal practise.
I'm all the more happy that the song comes over well polished. And I shall work on a more direct sound in future. I hope you liked my reference track. <3

Re: Dancing on 3rd street
Very strong melodic sense and arrangement, excellent choice of sounds and of course, there is a 50% chance that I am going to say amazing mixing, but...here it is
