Lars Domino - Ge upp [rock-pop]

Post by oscillator »

So, the world is going to hell, just when I though the pandemic started to fade, we have what is starting to look like a world war. The consequences, human suffering, animal suffering, even more destruction of the environment, food shortage, energy shortage. Well, I live in a safe place (at least for now), so I should be happy, but I am not, how can I be?

So....it is time to give up and I wrote a slow lousy song about this, which for most parts just tells what a shitty person I am. So I revelled in my own lousiness and misery, than I started to think that I could up the tempo of this song and turn it into a rocker. Giving up -- it should be fun! And, it means I haven't given up. I am still working on projects, I have my loved ones around me, safe and sound, I have a roof over my head and food on the table. And I am grateful for that.

So, Oscillator studios kind of proudly presents

Lars Domino - Ge upp (Give up)

Music: Staffan Melin
Guitars: Mats Palats

Fast version: https://youtu.be/BSPA0WkOXLA
Slow lousy version: https://youtu.be/ECGXH6-UQMw

If anyone is interested in what I am singing in Swedish, this is a lousy translation that I made for you of the quick version:

the climate is going to hell
still people eat meat
fly all over the globe
go by car to buy shitty stuff
I'm so glad I stopped to care

the rich walk around
put their cigars out in the cup of a beggar
build their ugly high towers
worship the temple of cars
but what do I care

so
just give it up
there is no second chance
you are a loser
whatever you do
until you draw your last breath

there is always more to do
always more to see
war and violence and dead oceans
men that never lets up
I don't want it no more

I gladly pay my taxes
but it often goes to the wrong places
to shitty people
that hate the not so successful
but what do I care

and when I die
well then they will still complain
that I am not up to the task
wrecking my body
for a greedy company

well
I give up
this is the end
I have no energy left
I just want to lie down
draw my breath

there is always new ways to be humiliated
feeling just wrong
I have ticked all the boxes
and I am so frigging tired
I have spent all my energy

so what is the point of running
when the rain is lashing
at your face
why struggle
when everyone hates
those words that burn
and you just scream

I stop striving
and lashing out
and get well-adapted
I say "thank you" for the food
with dead pigs
I take my SUV back home
in time for the TV show

there I sit and laugh
at people getting humiliated
"oh this is good"

Hey hey @oscillator , if that isn't art, I don't know what is. You write a song about the world going down, criticising your "shitty self" and it makes me smile. :) Possibly the slow version even more so. Is that singing in the dark to push the scares away or the conviction that sad lyrics don't need sad chords, because that would make it kitsch?
Good production on both. Very different and all the better for it. I love the polished almost glib sound of the fast version, reminiscent of modern party schlager. it's well done!
Best wishes, jeanette

I definitely prefer the slow version, but the way you saw it from the other side is amazing as well as video sequence. It is so inconsistent with the audio that at first you are perplexed, and then go nuts.
I also like the idea and the words. Have been thinking about making something like this myself since this feeling is very close to me, but couldn't find the words. So you inspired one more loser not to stop.
Thank you!
Sorry if I distracted you with such a nonsense.

I'm not sure, I have a drive to make things grittier, but that seldom happens. Then I wouldn't need many chords at all! :)

That is cool, thank you for those words! Looking forward to your "giving up" song! :)

I think this is the first time I've listened to two completely different songs that are actually the same song
While I enjoyed the faster one more musically (very 80's oriented!), it didn't really fit the mood of the lyrics, as the themes seem "happier": the slow version seems more apt to the theme you sang about instead.

Well, too bad Eurovision just finished, the fast version was just ready for it  the slow version is very original, I like the cabaret-y feel even if I prefer the fast version

Haha, yeah it got quite catchy. 140 bpm is the new standard tempo for me! :)
